1975 GL1000 project
Time to get this running again. Ran great when parked in 1998.

Rebuilding both brake master cylinder now. I have to make sure it will stop, before I make it go.
Thank you, Don B.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
You'll probably need to rebuild the wheel cylinders and at a minimum flush the lines, too.

It's gorgeous. It looks like it's been parked in a dust-free, moisture-free environment.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
The bike has a Vetter Windjammer 3 that I am leaving off, for now. Also a set of Krauser bags that are ready to clip on. I am going for the naked Wing for now as I have a HD touring bike with factory sidecar, bought when I parked the Wing in 1998.
Thank you, Don B.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
I pulled the plugs, sent a couple glugs of ATF down each hole and let it sit for a day before turning engine with Kickstart. Next hole up battery and spun it over with plugs out, oil light when off after a second or 2. Checked plugs for spark, and we are golden.
Thank you, Don B.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
ok. the bike runs. ran it twice, up to temp each time until fan kicked on. changed oil and filter twice. it smoked a lot the first run as it burnt off all the atf I dumped in it. I am happy with how it sounds. I used a small remote fuel tank hung high to feed fuel into the pump, second run I set tank on ground and fuel pump sucked it up. so far, so good.
Thank you, Don B.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
Beautiful bike Don! How did you store the bike, specifically the carbs, after so long? Did they need anything?

Please, please get your belts changed before you run it any more!

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
I will get some timing belts ordered. I stored the bike in my garage, and knew it was going for a long lay up. I drained the carbs, from the bowls. Put some fuel stabilizer in the tank, and put a think coat of wax over the whole thing and left it on. Over all it looks like it came through the down time ok. Some thing did fall off shelf and landed on the fuel tank door and put small dent.
Thank you, Don B.

Re: 1975 GL1000 project
ok, so I found the timing belts on rock auto. gates t274 for 14 dollars each, shipping for 5 bucks.2 dollars tax. 35.25 total. I drained and unbolted radiator in anticipation of the belts arrival. Also took off the Vetter faring bracket. Next up is to get the wiring sorted out.
Thank you, Don B.
