Oh, wow. I can't imagine I'm trying to go that low.

Even scraping the pegs, which happens often enough on my 1100s not to be a mere hypothetical, I'd need to really get leaned over to hit the brake or clutch lever. But you raise an important concern.

Thanks for the important note.

Minus paint, I think this project is ready to get registration paperwork, a plate, and some miles on the road.

It's a good feeling.

After much back and forth about paint, I'm going with a mid-70s CB550F look. I'm going with Shiny Orange. The inspiration is something along these lines:
1976-honda-super-sport-cb550f-excellent-original-condition-shiny-orange-runner--1.jpeg
1976-honda-super-sport-cb550f-excellent-original-condition-shiny-orange-runner--1.jpeg (51.46 KiB) Viewed 974 times
As a complement to the color and Super Sport badging, I secured some original CB750 Super Sport Honda tank badges in decent condition, but with the obligatory black paint flaking and worn gold color over the aluminum. I cleaned them up, sanded off the gold to bring out a brushed metal look, and painted them matte black. The photo shows them still drying, and I need to do a bit of detail work to clean up remaining paint on the lettering.

I'm pretty happy with them. I had patched over the holes in the shelter sides, planning to go with a chrome-look vinyl wrap. But that isn't happening. I redrilled one of the original shelter badge holes, measured the location for the second Super Sport badge pin, and drilled the shelter. I had to do some finessing of the badges to get them to hug the shelter sides, but they're metal and it was pretty easy.

I've been waiting until the exhaust was sorted and the airbox was locked down to work on the carb adjustments. Today was the day for a synchronization, and I pulled out the CarbTune. It turned out that #3 was way, way out in comparison to the others. Of course, that really sort of means they were just not synchronized.

I might have played with things a bit more, but I was able to pull it all together pretty well and only had to pause and shut down the bike once because the fan came on. #4 might come up a bit, and #1 might come down.

If I run into issues when she's on the road and under load, I'll revisit things. Right now, I sense no stumble or hesitation with either gradual throttle or a full-on rapid twist. And she comes back down to idle without hanging up. I thought the bike was running pretty well before; smooth is how I'd describe it now.

I reused the original muffler mounting brackets, as they have that little slit for the rear pegs - and the left side has the integrated center stand stop. I cut them both way down, retaining only the little rounded bump from the right one. On the left, I kept the back end down to and including the center stand. Cutting away the front portion enabled me to fit little aluminum muffler mounting brackets fabricated from some scrap in my pile.

It's not as nicely laid out as one can find on NGW. I might have tried to go either horizontal OR to run parallel to the rear portion of the frame. I took the easy route, using straight muffler pipe to get from the header to the muffler and mainly sticking with the header exit angle.

An unanticipated setback: A crack in a Dyna coil.

I don't know when it happened, and I noticed nothing odd about ignition, running, etc.

After work today, I was "tinkering" at the edges, mainly to attach the vacuum line to the #1 carb bowl. While down there, I noticed an oddly routed wire, which led me to remove the top right engine mount bolt to re-route.

While in there with my 17mm socket, I saw the crack.

While it seems not to be acting up now, I can imagine a damp/wet scenario will cause issues - just when I really don't care to be stuck on the side of the road.

I don't think I can epoxy up the crack, so it looks like another set is in my near future.

I don't want to full freight on new coils if I can avoid it.

Query: I think the following images show what I'm looking for. They're described as being for a Harley, but Dyna's own site lists the green GL1000 coils as being for a Harley.

I know: they're dated '95.

New ones will be, well, new. And they're not all that much more than twice the price of used.

In other news, I made a little fiberglass tool bin for the space above the airbox. I have some refining to do, and it's much better than it looks in the photo. It's going to be just great for my purposes. Easy.

Quick update on my coil situation: Cyborg helped me out, and I 'm super appreciative.

He reached out to help me acquire a used coil he had kicking around. Days later, the package arrived.

Last night, I took about 45 minutes to install the coil, reattach assorted bits, and all is right with that part of the build world.

Thank you, Cyborg!

This is a fun comparison photo. The cracked coil is on the bottom, darker green, and a bit different in texture/material. If I read the numbering correctly, it's a 20 year old coil. The replacement is a baby at 12 years old.

And in the background is the box that Sodbuster's GL1100 Progressive shocks came in. Those are going on the Blue Phoenix before she rolls out of the shed for the season - very soon.

Cyborg: the color mismatch isn't noticeable once the coils are installed. I wonder if the newer material is better - or maybe it's just cheaper to manufacture.

hard to say. I have several, and the color did change over time. I have seen them crack like yours did, and have always been the older ones, which were the older color. Thats why I sent yoju the newer style

On Friday, I slipped out of the office an hour early to use the 70-degree day to spray some paint.

I like where I'm landing with the color. The shiny orange is more red in the shade and more orange in bright light. Maybe it's a bit too safety orange. I suppose that it might be dangerous: camouflaged motorcycle in a roadwork zone!

My first go at applying color went pretty well - with some glitches. I knew it would happen in some fashion. I just can't quite ID all the little imperfections when the panels are in primer. The gloss makes them jump out at me. It's not visible in the photo, but there's a small "indentation" just below and left of the H. On an angle, it's obvious to me. Not that big a deal, but it annoys me because I can fill it better.

And then I had some other "handling" issues to deal with. I'll need to do some clean up and respray.

Would you believe a pull cord for the 80HP Briggs & Stratton nestled in there?

That's the string I used to hang the panel for painting. I haven't removed it yet.

The real question concerns the somewhat inconspicuous bicycle brake cable with a little loop that's dangling above the fuel pump.

That string is my homemade replacement for the non-existent one that keeps the side panel from swinging down when unscrewed from inside the shelter. It's attached to the shelter and will be attached to the inside of the panel when I mount it all up.

In other news, I've been having a little hiccup with the right exhaust smoking a bit and not clearing up until she's been running for maybe another 10. I know about the smoke from the left side if a GL is left on the side stand, but that's not the situation here. Any smoke on the left has been clearing pretty quickly after start up.

I haven't panicked, really, as it's not that much smoke, it isn't bluish, it's definitely not coolant, and it's been clearing out. I think it coincided with my recent change out of the oil. I might have filled it right up near the top, which I've read can exacerbate the tendency of oil to get burned when these bikes start up.

This past weekend, I started her up again to let her run up to good operating temp. The nagging smoke issue didn't rear its ugly head. This is good news.

On the other hand and not surprisingly, my drip-drip of oil from the water pump weep hole continues to drip. I'll run the bike this summer and watch the oil level, using a catch pan in the driveway if needed. I'm hoping to be able to put at least a few thousand miles on her before the snow starts flying again. If the drip doesn't remedy itself, I'll wait until winter to pull the front cover to address the failing o-ring.

Forward, and Backward.

First, the positive: Paint is coming along nicely. I need another warm day to spray the clear, but I'm mostly satisfied with the look. (I could work one of the side panels again, but I'm not feeling it right now.)

Now, the negative: I was going to roll the Wing out of the shed and into the driveway, with an eye on a maiden voyage down to the beach and back.

I went to start her, which I usually do at least once a week. Last Sunday, I had her running up to temp, and all was well. She sat there for the week.
  • Today, turn the key, all seems good.
  • Hit the start button, and there's a half crank followed by no lights on the dash.
  • I remove the side panel to access the battery and get a jump start going. (I have an weak battery, so that's a thing I've often had to do.)
  • Positive terminal screw is super hot, battery is warm.
  • I'm confused. I unscrew the leads, check the 30 amp blade fuse - fuse looks good/fine.
  • Battery isn't showing any volts.
  • I pull the battery and attach a charger.
  • I and start looking around the area for exposed wires to see if a short/ground might be messing with things.
  • I find a hangover twist+electrical tape connection on a lead to the solenoid and fix that with solder and heat-shrink insulation. But it was all taped up pretty well anyway.
  • Battery up to 12v, I reinstall.
  • I'm getting sparks when attaching the negative lead. Hmm.
  • Turn the key, and there's no lights on the dash.

Maybe the 30-amp fuse looks good but isn't? Other candidates for a sudden loss of any power at the dash? And what might I make of the sparking negative lead? (Or positive lead, actually, when I was removing that screw to pull the battery?)

New 30-amp fuse. Does nothing to change the scenario.

Here's a fun bit: I hook up the leads to the battery, and I get almost no voltage reading at the battery using my multimeter. I disconnect, and I can get volts on the battery.

I'm feeling pretty forgetful and confused - or maybe mostly frustrated - but I'm struggling to think about what's happening.

What's changed since last Sunday? Two things: I put the left shelter cover on, and I put the left side panel on. I might have squeezed a wire somehow in that process, but I don't really think there was a lot of pressure anywhere. The panels aren't finished, and I wanted to be super careful with them.

A year ago I struggled to sort out the wiring. I had it well sorted and dialed in. Hmm.

Check for voltage at the starter motor stud with the key switch turned OFF. Yes? There may be an internal problem in the starter solenoid, itself.

Thanks. Will do.

I seem to have returned myself to where I was a week ago.
  • I swapped in a battery from another GL.
  • Poking around and inspecting connections/wires, I found one of the nuts on the solenoid was not cranked down all the way. I tightened it down. (Of course, it's been that way for weeks/months.)
With the different battery, I had no trouble starting. I had no heat at/around the battery or wires. And I had good voltage back to the battery with the bike running.

Maybe the solenoid (pretty new, of course) isn't quite up to snuff. Maybe there's something with that old battery.

I'm not convinced I'm out of the woods, but thank goodness I'm not dead in the water either.

I've been nursing that old battery far too long. It's the one that was on the bike 18 months ago, and it was lame then. The amazing thing is that it's been able to start the bike pretty regularly when it's not below about 40. I knew I needed a new one for the bike. Now's the time.

Not much of an update, but I stumbled across the lost little cover that goes between the headlight and the dash lights. I didn't recall removing it, and I don't know why I would have. But clearly it came off the bike and went into a box with other takeoffs back in December '21.

I got to remove the headlight to screw the little cover on and button up those exposed wires just sitting out there to get hit with the elements. I'm happy to have that bit.

Then I discovered that the GL1100 headlight bucket on the bike runs a good bit deeper than the GL1000 bucket I don't have. AI may not be able to get angle I might need for actual long-distance visibility at night because the bucket hits the little cover.

A night time road test will tell.
