Paint job by amateur

#1

Post by cfairweather »

Thought some of you might like to see my paint job for two 1975 Gl1000s and a 1971 CB750. I did all three at the same time and used Apple Red from www.TheCoatingStore.Com. I used a silver primer base on the GL1000 pieces and Stellar Silver on the CB750 pieces. If you look closely, I used Stellar Silver base on the four radiator scoops because I had to repaint them and ran out of the silver primer base. They are far from perfect, but I am pleased with the outcome. The white streaks and dots are not flaws, they are reflections for the sun.

Thanks Cliff. It was a lot of work and honestly the pictures don't do justice to actually looking at the parts. Usually pictures make things look better, but in this case my wife and I agree that they look much better in person. Each time I paint, I learn a little bit, so I am getting better, but I am still a novice.

Very nice. Could you detail the type of paint, clear coat, paint gun, etc.?

Thanks for your comments. The paint is 2K Urethane candy and I used a 2K Urethane Primer-sealer. One of the lessons I have learned is to use a quality gun to apply the clear coat. I bought a 20 oz. Professional HTE Compliant Gravity Feed Air Spray Gun from Harbor Freight that has a 1.3 tip. Best $100.00 I have spent in Harbor Freight! This gun is capable of creating a very fine mist and the clear goes down like glass. I was using a cheap gun from Harbor Freight to apply the clear and it was much harder to get a glass like appearance without buffing. I still use the cheap gun to apply the primer and the base coat but I use the HTE gun for the candy and the clear. I also used The Coating Store 2K Glamour Clear urethane which is beautiful and durable. Here are the 2K urethane paints I used:

ColorSeal 2K Urethane Primer Sealer - Silver Metallic
Stellar Silver S202
Apple Red EyeKandy
2K Glamour Clear Urethane UC-210

Very nice job. I did exactly what you are doing with my ex-1500 Pearl Glacier White, three part paint system, and my '85 Limited Edition. Bought a lot of spray guns, and have settled on what I need. I used 2k epoxy primer when possible in spray cans. For the painting of my ex-1500, used $20.00 CDN spray guns, 0.8 mm nozzle, from our Princess Auto (HF equivalent) and these worked great. Easier to use and control for small projects. I have settled on a set of spray guns with 0.8 mm nozzle, it's a Meiji F55:

. I would buy the inexpensive ones again as these are a throw away if you want. Get one for each different application. In the case of my ex-1500 I had one for the base coat, one for the pearl, and one for the clear coat. I thought about using a spray gun for the primer, but went with spray cans instead - not a less expensive approach, but more convenient.

If you are going to refresh the switches, use 2k epoxy primer directly onto the clean switch cases. Did a lot of experimenting to get the best paint adhesion and it was using the 2K epoxy primer directly onto the switch case surface, then paint, and apply the CERAKOTE product I mention below. Looks good.

I made a lazy Susan to sit the parts on and it allowed me to rotate the pieces without handling. Made some jigs to elevate the pieces as well. The rotating part is less than $10.00 CDN:

Used this same lazy Susan, rated for 1000 lbs, to put the '85 Limited Edition 1200 engine back together (rebuilt it). Manhandling a 350 lb engine is not always the easiest.

The last issue I dealt with was finding a protectant for the vapour blasted, sand blasted and painted components. ACF 50 was recommended, but this is a fluid film that works well, but collects crap. Went with a CERAKOTE product MC5100 good for all types of aluminum finishes including vapour blasted surfaces, and on painted surfaces. nothing sticks to it, and it cleans up with a damp rag. Works well on a Gold Wing that is covered in plastic.

Look forward to seeing the finished product. Cheers

Fred- I am about to start two 1975 GL1000 projects and the parts will go on these. I plan to do one with all the improvements that I think the GL1000 should have had from the beginning and the other will be stock. The CB750 parts you see in the above pictures went on a 1971 CB750 that I just finished. Here are two pictures of the parts on the bike.

I totally rebuilt the wheels with new bearings, spokes, rims and I did all the work. I took the entire motorcycle apart including the engine and fixed everything. I can install spokes in about 30 minutes but it sometimes takes me 3 hours to true the wheel to my satisfaction :).
