Yep, Naval Jelly does the same thing but does not slosh well in a fuel tank or easily enter little connectors. Where you have to clean an outside surface it is better than pour on since it stays there.
I was not aware of the other possibilities, just the conctrete cleaner and rust remover.
Social stuff is getting in the way of bike work but yesterday I found out the petcock leaks and the year and a half old fuel smells spoiled. This may mean re-cleaning the carbs too, I expected this so its hardly a shock.
I have a ton of social stuff and another trip this week so I may not be able to fiddle much.
I did find a good Goldwing seat for $20 on Craigslist.

Cookie

works fairly well on nasty brown gasoline, too. got some on my work pants about 3 weeks ago. did two cans of Coke in the wash.

Muractic acid..pool supply store or HD has it even your grocery store. full strengthen dip for a second or two..don't breath in the flumes they suck and burn..very fast so be careful or mix 50/50 or so and go slower..experiment to see what works for you. Eats aluminum very quickly but Ok on steel and copper, brass etc. buts still eats if if left alone. rise with water and/ or baking soda. Have a cleanng bucket ready to go next to the acid bath.

I just rolled it out and drained the gas tank. The petcock needs rebuilding and the more I look at the wiring the more I see wrong. On the plus side even the original finish on the cases can be saved. The only refinishing necessary will be the mufflers.
I just washed off the dust and de-greased it and I'll post pix.
I dropped my terribly corroded solenoid into a 50% acid mix yesterday. I'll pull it out and post pix too.

Cookie

Brick-cleaning acid is something available in the UK. Coke used to contain more phosphoric than it does nowadays it seems. I remember as a youngster my Dad soaking rags in coke (I mean Coke) to de-rust things (on a VW - should have built a huge vat and thrown the whole thing in). No idea about electrical/plated parts but phosphoric acid removes rust from ferrous metals.
Battery acid should work as a cleaner too I suppose.

cyclepsycho, giving up smoking is easy, done it a hundred times LOL

Cookie have you got pics of the new beastie, or have I missed them somewhere? A belated congrats on the new addition btw....

I'm going to try and post a link to my album.

http://www.ngwclub.com/gallery/album240

The picture called cleaning it up is where I am toI may resort to pulling the sender and see if I can clear it from that end as the screen is probably sealed.
The solenoid picture is after a night in the acid. It was truly corroded solid and I used it since it was a mass of rust and the mday. The yellow is actually deeper than that in person. As usual I easily rebuilt the petcock today and then ran into a cock up. The tank had been removed, cleaned, and sealed by the last owner. The reserve pick up is very well sealed in fact. I ran a piece of 1/8 inch cable through it and have it open a bit but I'm not sure enough. I may try again later before installing the petcock. I used the solenoid as it was the most ugly and useless thing I had around. It might be actually rebuild able now as all parts are free, but I'm not sure I would feel good about the thing having been pickled.

Much better than my other one. I just saw an early 80s on Craigslist for $500 with 7,000 miles. I have to stop looking at Craigslist, I did get a perfect seat there the other day for $20 though.
Off for a trip now, will check in later and expect to see some progress on that pommy hot bike.

Jeez, wish we could get Wings that cheap here. Though I paid $400 for mine it's a pretty rare happening.
Progress, cheers, another post coming... not good really though.

That's less than the tires are worth, good deal mate! My wife looked over my shoulder and said she bets it doesn't run, but she is used to my deals.
