Cenral MA to vermont

#1

Post by Toehead »

Guys,

This is a great ride!

take 119 from anywhere in central MA towards vermont.
Follow 119 to its end in brattleboro VT.
grab rt 9 W and go up and over the green mts on the Molly Stark overpass. (Fantastic)
From there, you can either continue on to the lakes of NY or stop in bennington and grab a reasonably priced room like I did.

Lots of twisties, scenery, and fun!

I'm certainly game, and I know my father would be as well. He has a CX500D with a vetter.

I actually have met Roger. He came over and absolutely pillaged the carcass of my '76 parts bike. You actually look very familiar as well. Have you been to rice-o-rama?

I thought Brattleboro was under water right now?? I think that is one of the Towns I used to travel through on my way to Buffalo when I was stationed in Brunswick but that was a long time ago and my memory is poor at such things. I know some of those roads up there were just spectacular.

I Made a short ride out to the area a couple of weeks ago to make sure the fall ride would be possible. Brattleboro and Vermont Route 9 is open to the areas we need to access. I am not sure if the back roads in through and around Charlemont are open. To verify the route we are taking, I am planning a pre-ride this Saturday October 1st to make sure we have a nice worry free diversion free ride.

Since I do not start my day without a cup of coffee, I will be at the Dunkin Donuts in Paxton at between 8:00 AM and around 8:45 AM. If anyone would like to go on the scouting ride, I will be more than happy to have the company and share the day. Saturday is still forecast to be nice, this stalled rain cloud that is hovering over New England is supposed to break up and get the heck out of here by then.

Here is an overview of the proposed route: Depart Dunkin Donuts and head North West on Route 122 all the way through Orange. Head North on Route 78 To Winchester New Hampshire. Weave our way through about 6 or 7 back roads and finally onto Route 112 and into Shelburn Falls (Shelburn Falls Coffee Roasters to be exact) This will be Route 2, then head North on Route 2 to Charlemont. Just past Charlemont there is a turn off to Rowe (former site of the Yankee nuclear power plant) We head North on a back road to Rowe and then on to Whitingham Vermont. We get onto Vermont Route 100 to Wilmington for a few miles then head East on Route 9 over Hogback Mountain into Brattleboro. From Brattleboro we head down I-91 getting on Route 2 East and back to Gardner and then following 68 back to Rutland then into Worcester. This is a full day ride but not a but buster either. There are food and gas stops and well as Photo ops too.

If you decide to go, Dunkin Donuts is on Route 122 in Paxton. Please arrive with a full tank of Gas. Next Gas will probably be in Charlemont (providing the roads are open)

Ahhh yes.. Hog Back Mountain. I've stopped there many times. My In-Laws live in South Shaftsbury and it's absolutely beautiful county up there in those hill. If I EVER get my bike back from the shop, I'd love to make a pass out that way from Albany.

Yesterday I drove RT 15 E from Essex Junction to Hardwick, then 14 S 15 miles to Calais where I live. I found out where all the motorcycles are on Sunday in northern Vermont.

Let's have a great turn out. Lots of twisty windy roads And plenty of places to stop to eat, take pictures or bathroom break.
