You guys will hate me, but...

I had a great ride up California Hwy.1 day before yesterday. I had to head to the coast for some dental work and froze my fingers and face going over the grade on Hwy.41, where the biggest problem was all the greasy dead skunk spots in the roadway. I got my mouth-work done and headed to the boat to fire up the diesel and charge the batteries as rain became more certain, but at least it was warmer! After an hour of puttering, I noticed some blue sky, so I rowed back ashore and headed up the coast on the hack. It was maybe 65 degrees as I rode along the beaches, and not much traffic. Three Harley guys gave me the thumbs up (!!?) when I roared past them as they lunched...I ran up to San Simeon State beach and was nearly the only vechicle in the parking lot. San Simeon is one of my favorite anchorages, and it was fun to have arrived so easily. Everything was blue, blue, blue...the sky, the ocean, well, not me..
I headed back south and then east on Hwy 46, and stopped at the top for the view (1,750 ft. and views of the ocean north and south) mainly because I had been followed by "the man" since Cambria. I pulled over and watched the hawks circling below me for a few minutes then continued, but about five miles later he pulled behind me again and followed me to Templeton where I diverted to my father-in-laws to have a brandy for medicinal purposes...great ride anyway! I only burned 2.5 gal. of fuel despite climbing the hills at 55mph!! I love my little hack!!!

Thanks for sharing what sounds like a wonderful day, except for the dental work. :-D Riding California Hwy 1 would be a dream come true for me.

I like the idea of freezing your face BEFORE getting to the dentist!

Most sensible.....

I feel an urgent need to road test my own little three wheeled beastie. Better pull me finger out and get on with it.

Brian,(Rogue1000) I can't find the thread where I asked you, but what size wheels do you have on the rig?

I asked on the thread where you mentioned not keeping up with your bro in law's Hardley on hills. I'm interested to find out what to expect from mine.

I find the thought of a Hardley blowing past me on an incline COMPLETELY INTOLERABLE and will go to any lengths to uphold the Honour of our Nipponese Friends in avoiding this sort of terminal embarrassment. If it takes a Magnacharger and Nitrous, so be it!

Well, I have to admit it sucked big time, Hal...especially because it was my bro-in-law, who has a lot of trouble even saying the word Honda...I looked for one of those GEM gear sets for awhile, but none popped up on my screen, so I settled for the 16 inch Lester. Not that I can tell any difference... , but without the sidecar I know he could not have rolled away from me; it is a lot of extra weight to push..When it is just me, I don't go as fast just for economy.

Do you have any idea what your rig weighs, Brian? I will put mine on the municipal weighbridge, which is only 70m from our front door, when it's finished as I have no clue.

I'm thinking your gearing is probably a bit high with the 16" rear....what's the tyre profile? I'll check mine, but I think running a 155/80 x 15 will mean my gearing is a fair bit lower than original.

As for bro in laws, mine just accidentally caused 3 of our 8 chickens to vanish. We let them wander around during the day, and if you leave the gate to their large run open, they always head for the hut at sundown. Last night, the gate wasn't open. One got into the house anyway, one ended up on the 2m high chainlink fence, and three came out of the laurel hedge this morning but three are MIA.

MIA chickens...reminds me of a story... ;) The gearing is too high even with a lower profile tire (130/80/16) and the power band is way up there as befits a sportbike, but I knew this when I bought the bike. A better choice would be just a year or two later, with lower gearing and more usable power band...But I'm a patient guy, waiting and watching for the next bike to jump on...nobody seems to like the GL1500's but they have plenty of power and the later ones have reverse! Man, they do go cheap, but they are also very ugly...

I suppose you could easily swap the cams for the 78 onward ones, which should give more midrange torque and power where you need it...

That is an interesting idea, and I will look into doing it with my second engine...I just rode to the weighing station, and the rig weighs 960# with all the usual gear that I carry, plus some wine and groceries...maybe 100# less without the lead plate, gal.of oil, tools, water...
