Aaaahhh, breaks keep freezing up... This started after change of master cylinder. Coincidence? Rubber mallet and waiting for them to cool down can get me a few blocks at a time but this need to be adressed!

I need all your advice:
Now we have the Kawasaki sport bike master. (Is it too big?)

We have the original 79 breaklines (no cracks, dont seem dry... Collapsed inside?)

And finally the calipers that The PO claims to have rebuilt.. We have some picture proof but it doesnt tell the whole story... (Sticking?)

In you opinion what could be causing this? What should be the logical next step? Chime in! We really like to be going soon! Cheers!

i'd get the bike checked out by someone else, other than someone who smacks calipers with a hammer for sticking issues, unless perhaps they fix that for free, after already changing & charging money i'm sure, for an m/c, that made no diff

any info on when the cam belts were last done?

If you barely open the bleed screw to allow a small amount of brake fluid to bleed out when the brakes freeze does it release the brakes? If it does there is probably a very small release hole in the master cylinder that is plugged. This is a fairly common problem on the Honda master cylinders. I don't know how to tell you where to look for it on the replacement master.

A Kawasaki sport bike and your GL both have dual calipers, so the master cylinder should be sized correctly. If smacking with a mallet frees them up, I'd suspect sticking pistons. If you have to wait for them to cool down, it's more likely the return hole in the master like Sagebrush suggested. Good luck!

Its hard to tell if it was the smacking of the calipers or the time it took, that freed the brakes.

I can tell you that when it happens, the lever is completely stiff in the outest position... Suggesting the return hole?

When they bought the bike and rode it here from long island, and when I rode it here around town prior to the new mc, there was no sticking whatsoever... Only insufficient braking. Suggesting calipers are fine?

Timing belts are changed this year.
So far the sellers description has matched. Only thing that he put a too small mc and believed air was stuck becuse the lever was too soft. Could be honest mistake?

Thanks for all input! Please continue to share your thoughts about this!

Update:
Went out this morning brakes, were free. Took the bike a few streets up and down, and by the time i came back i was not able to push it by hand anymore...

Bled a few drops both sides, and brakes felt like new again!

Must be mc return hole right? If it were the lines it would be like dragging and a little bit different symptoms right?

Once the calipers are free are you able to slide them back and forth by hand easily, or do they feel sticky? The caliper slide pins are keyed on the '79 but its really easy to accidentally spin them during reassembly so they don't sit exactly 90 degrees to the mount causing them to bind.

So yesterday I went back to the "motorgrrl" garage in NY. Not being a popular customer... The day before I after getting new bearing their mechanic (friendly and nice guy) showed IMO complete incompetence while putting the wheel back on... The front axel clamps he put on backwards... Then using wrong tightening sequense. So i told hime redo it explaining about it..... Still wrong sequense.. Gap should be visible to the back..then the disk was hitting the caliper! I ended up doing it myself! 30 year experience qualifed Honda mechanic 100 bucks an hour??!!

...so with me not willing to pay for extra time it took to fix his messed up work, it all escalated to a big fight. I got the owner on the phone and at the same time Amanda threatend with police.... In the end we got 25 percent off anyway..

...so yesterday realising the brake problem would be the return hole in the mc i was a little hesitant going back.... But they should correct wrongs in parts they provided!

So their mechanic cleaned the mc, but i told them i wanted to see a clean hole before leaving... Problem is he never found it, but they said it was clean and problem was calipers... Big argue and i left...

yep unfortunately that is why most of us do all our own work. There are very few out there truly qualified to work on our bikes.
