Empi "webers"?

#1

Post by transalpian »

Greetings!

I'm considering Randakks dual weber manifold setup. Does anyone here have experience with the EMPI knockoffs? It looks like their HPMX units are interchangable with the weber IDF carbs. (cheaper too)

Anyone use these? Any issues?

Thanks

I was talking to a guy who builds VW trikes and asked him where he was getting the Webers. He explained they were EMPI's or Weber clones and he ran them on all his VW engines. I'm also lusting after the Randakk Intakes and dual carbs, so have been looking at different alternatives too.

EMPI HPMX's are made in China and are pretty much junk, get on any VW forum and ask about them and you will get a ear full about what crap they are. A few guys have spent the time to make them work but you have to almost rebuild them out of the box, they have porosity issues and need to be cleaned out to get the crud out of them. every body says Dellorto's are the way to go but parts are getting hard to find and you will pay a premium for them, the best Weber's are the ones made in Spain and the Italian models come in a close second. IDF's are being made in the US but they are not much better the HPMX's.

As an aircooled Volkswagen enthusiast myself I agree completely with earthquake. Don't bother with them unless they are cheap cheap.

Thanks for the feedback. I picked up a set of true Weber 40IDFs on ebay that are going to need rebuilt, but should be the ticket and were less than a set of EMPI, even including the rebuild kits.

Carbs Unlimited may be able to help. I got a Weber new in the box for 250. Or it was a remake not sure but it is not bad.

Thats a pretty good price. I scored a pair for $225 but they both need rebuilt so figure another $80-100 in rebuild kits, plus a lot of time for cleaning.
