The problem with the idle seems better when the fuel tank is full. I reworked the fuel line runs last night night to make them a bit shorter.
I may attempt to pull the carbs today to take a look. Nothing has fallen apart yet and I'll keep my fingers crossed on that.

I have to believe it's something like a machining chip got stuck somewhere and is partially blocking something. The electric fuel pump isnt the problem but it seems to be struggling to maintain a level in the float bowls. When I pull up to a light after a longish 55mph run it seems to drop a cylinder. After idling for 30 seconds its OK again.

I'd like to thank you folks for the compliments. Now quit patting me on the back and try to think of what else I might want to look at.

A double check on float levels might be in order. And like you said, could be something in a line. I would think it would affect it under heavy throttle though too.

If you have carbs pointing straight ahead and level, maybe you will need a different than stock float height. I don't know how many degrees the stock ones are canted, but it's enough to make a difference, I think.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Eric...Robin and I discussed the carb angle last fall. When the stock bike makes a turn the carb angle changes. I decided to make them level and the floats are at stock height. I'm going to leave them alone for a bit.

I putzed with it for a bit this morning and went for a ride. Barely made it home. The #3 and #4 idle jets were plugged up. With them cleaned out it ran fine. (#1 needs some love now.) I ultrasonically cleaned the carbs but those idle jets are so small that the least amount of grit plugs them again. These carbs haven't been run since 1977 so this may be a continuing maintenance problem till they get run in. Fortunately I can access the jets without pulling the carbs.

Right now I dont have a lot of confidence in it. I believe that if I make it to the Gilmore show it will be on the trailer. Old Fogey helped me a bunch with the final drive rebuild and the front wheel swap and if he and Doug are gonna make it there then I'll probably make it one way or another.

BTW Sunnbobb - the gunk in the carbs was not rhinestone dust.

Well all is much better. 300 miles on the setup and the carbs have quit boogering up.
It starts well and runs well both off the line and down the interstate. I haven't ridden a stock 1000 but this is probably real close. It runs up to redline well but doesn't have the big oomph at 5000-8000 rpm. It's not weak, just not like the Weber setup.
The thing to do would be to dyno the setup. It's possible that it's just running lean at top end.

I'll be taking if off the bike here in a few minutes. I think I'm going to sell it as a one-off kit complete with the carbs.

It's not a bad install. You lose the left horn, there is a custom bracket to move the right horn inboard, and the right side of the fan baffle has to be relieved by 1/2" to clear the right side throttle linkage. The choke function is stiff and has to be worked by hand (the cable isn't getting it done and I think the reason is that the cross-bike rod is stiff in it's bearings. The throttle works will with a single pull cable. I run an electric fuel pump so one of the fuel lines would have to change. If I was going to keep it on I would lose the spark plug rubber connector piece because I can't pull the plugs with the manifolds in place.

If anyone is interested in this mess send me a PM. I like the way this setup looks but I like the Webers too and the Webers provide a noticeable horsepower gain over this setup.

The bad part about that is on the Dyno it won't run as lean. It won't have the air rushing in to the carbs at 60mph. They use fans but they don't blow faster as your speed increases. Do it would be tough to jet on a Dyno. Plug chops are about the only way to do it.

It's sitting on a shelf in the barn. I picked up another wing and was going to do a "steam punk" thing, but that bike is a mess and has royally tee'd me off so it probably won't happen. (It's turned out to be one of those 75-76-77-78-79-80-81-82-83 wings. Kind of like the Cadillac in the Johnny Cash song. There are parts from all kinds of wings on it.)

Jeez, I had forgotten how long ago I did this.
Well, they've been up in the attic since I moved down here. Next Sunday is the Thunder by the Bay show in Sarasota so I thought what the heck, bust them out and stick 'em back on. They are running pretty good. Good idle, accelleration is OK. I really like the look from the front. It's what anyone else has to look coming at them in their rear view mirror. I keep thinking B-17.

AND Cyborg...it's only gonna cost me $20 to try and win a $5 trophy. I'm getting better at this.
