Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Pardon my noob-ness men, but apart from "un-Cluttering" your front end, why would you want to get rid of your air assistance? I've got 5 running bikes (and a couple of projects) and my Interstate is the only one with air forks and air shocks, and is by far the most comfortable.
I spent well over $1000 on my new triumph Rocket III to try to make it as comfortable as my 'Wing (new progressive rear shocks and new seat) and failed miserably.
When I rebuilt the 'Wing's forks (new oil, seals and progressive springs) I had a very hard time compressing the springs and threading the caps back in, but once the bike was back together, with no air in the forks, the front end sagged a good 2 inches.
The "Ride off" stand, can be disasterous as it scrapes when cornering with the forks compressed, so I put 10 psi of air back in the forks, and they resumed their original stance. With 30 psi in the rear shocks, the bike still corners well, and "floats" over bumps. Like many here I'm carrying a back injury, so it's really nice to have plush suspension when I'm riding.
I'm guessing that it's just a "Form over Function" thing, but I'd never remove the air assistance on this bike. Cheers, Terry.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Terry, if they sag 2" without air, my guess is there's something else awry. Can't tell you what it might be since I don't have them here, but I can tell you that's not normal. They should hold their height without air, and if needed due to onboard weight or ride preference, then you can add air to compensate.
PROGRESS UPDATE: Finally got the new 8-pin connector for the regulator wiring, the old one was pretty well cooked by the yellow generator wires. I've already bypassed those but the old connector was a mess, finally had to use my Dremel with a cutting wheel and take it apart in pieces since my removal tool simply wouldn't penetrate enough to release the pins. If possible I wanted to use the same male/female pins in the new connector and they worked out fine. Had to clean off a big glob of die-electric grease from each pin, don't know why people do that. I had a slight miss on the right side and when I pulled the plugs to see how they were burning, they were covered with that grease from top to bottom. I had to disassemble both caps on the right side and clean them with Goof Off, once back together the engine smoothed out considerably. Next step....might start refinishing the tank and install a new petcock in conjunction with the fuel pump/filter. Then on to the forks.....will it ever get done???

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Is there any reason this manifold/carb set up wouldn't work on a GL1000?

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
I do not know, never messed with a 1000......I have a scrap 1000 engine that was stuck in a 1100 frame I bought, and it looks the same dimensons, but no manifold boots or carbs were on it....someone will come along and give you a answer.....but I would say ez-peeze.

It should work. 1100 carb setup will bolt right on a 1000. 1000 carb setup bolts right on an 1100.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
We are heading to Hot Springs this weekend on both bikes, about 500 mile round trip. Should be a great test for my PVC manifold conversion.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
600 mile round trip to Hot Springs and explorin' the area, Labor Day Week-End. Me and the Lady I let ride my other bike left Saturday morning. As always, Yellow 82 1100 with stock carbs, & Black 81 1100 with PVC Manifold and a 34-3 PICT carb. Both Bikes ran perfect, not a Hic-cup on the trip. Single Carb mpg was 39, excellent acceleration and power for the steep climbs in the Mountains north of Hot Springs. Cruised 55-60 mph whole trip, except in the mountains where it was curvy and steep........Oh Yeah, We had FUN.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Two of the 45 degree ells look to be longer than the other two. Is this right? Looking in my local hardware stores, and on the Flex PVC website, I only see 1 type. Please help an idiot.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
Yes two of the 45s are shorter, it is just different brands, if you hit the real Hardware stores and look in their bins you will find some that are shorter,,,,,,,,If not cut off both ends, but be sure and leave enuff for a good glue fit......everybody on these sites would like for you to believe it is Rocket Science, it is e-z...Just has to be airtight, solid, and as even in length from carb as possible. Don't over think it. On my next one I will use a 1 1/4 x 1 bushing socket to socket glue fitting to slip inside the rubber boot, it will fit tighter in the boots.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
if it helps: i sanded down the ends of an 8"-10 " piece of 1" pvc and inserted it into the 1" 45 and on the other end of pipe slid on a 1" coupling. Then turned my saw blade in my10" miter/chop saw around to cut backwards. This melts through the cuts. Then i used a piece of wire coat hanger with a hook on the end to pull out pipe that was cut off inside the 45. I also build the tee manifold and cut the tee's down the same way.

Re: GL1100 Cheap E-Z Single Carb Conversion
This has been interesting to read never thought there would be that much interest
on a plastic intake manifold.
Don't think I would put 1 on my bike.
The small runner diameter has higher velocity thus the feeling of torque, simplicity
of 1 carb.=no synchronizing.
I had a neighbor that said he could get more torque power etc.etc.
He worked on a 1 barrel conversion, 2 barrel, 2 1barrel, 2 2barrel,1 4 barrel lots of time and $$$
My stock 1978 a any time would blow his in the weeds.
I rode mine 28,000 with 1 synchronizing. 1 hr, at the local Honda shop.
I think $40-60,I went to eat Chinese, then up Bouquet to Frasquito down to Sierra
Highway down to Soledad Canyon and home when I went to bed he was.working
on the Wing putting on a Holly Webber with a new improved plenum.
To Each His Own. Hey is TEHO taken as a phrase abbreviation, such as lol.
If not I m claiming it !!! This is my experience and my opinion not meant to be
taken as a slam to you or your project,so don't take it too seriously.
