82 gl1100 alternate carb
I am working on a gl1100 trying to strip it down to basics, gravity feed gas tank. What I need to know is are there any mechanical slide carbs like mikunis that will work instead of the original CV style keihin? Any ideas would be great. I want to get rid of the air box.

There was a build thread a few years ago that used V-Max type carbs, IIRC...

Re: 82 gl1100 alternate carb
V-max carbs are also CV style. You won't anything that is "bolt on". Depending on your fab skills or your pocket book anything can be made to work.

Re: 82 gl1100 alternate carb
Thanks for the replies. Usually if I can dream it up either myself or one of my buddies can Fab it up. Can I run the stock keihins without the air box and just a filter? If not how reliable is the single carb conversion, I'm seeing a few people doing this but not seeing much feedback on reliability compared to stock carbs

That was Blight with the Vmax carbs. He tried Mikuni’s first. What Robin said.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Can I get away with running just an air filter like a Harley style or k&n style without the air box? How reliable is the single carb conversions? I have buddies that can Fab almost anything if I can't get it done.

Re: 82 gl1100 alternate carb
Running with the stock carbs and no airbox is tough. Just like any CV carb it is near impossible to get the jetting right. Some even say using a K&N filter in the stock airbox makes them off a little.
Many guys run a single carb and are very happy. Read some of the threads on that in this section.
I ask, why not run the stock carbs?

Re: 82 gl1100 alternate carb
There are numerous people running single carb conversions with good success. Depending on who you talk to, performance claims vary widely. As far as reliability, any setup is reliable as long as it's maintained properly.
Getting rid of the air box with the stock carbs presents it's own problems. These engines are much more sensitive to intake changes than exhaust. There are several people who have adapted open air filters, and just recently a member posted a link to adapters that bolt to the plenum and allow for a variety of filters.

Re: 82 gl1100 alternate carb
Sorry I repeated myself, haven't figured out the reply setup yet. The biggest reason I'm thinking of not using stock carbs with air box and all is that I'm going to be cutting out the "cage" and adding a single backbone to accept a steel gas tank with gravity feed. I've seen it done in pictures but with no feedback on carb issues r how they cleaned up the area.
