Re-did my insulation shroud to include the coolant crossover pipe and work the thermostat probe into the wiring, and what a huge difference it made! The 2000-3000 range became much more usable.

For this test the electronic thermostat was installed but not wired in; the grip heaters were on a simple on/off switch. Part way through the run while a full running temperature, I switched off the heaters. A few minutes later, the effect was appreciable.

Future tests will establish what temperature is need inside the insulated shroud and setting the thermostat accordingly.

Looking at a Dyna S kit to go with an electronic ignition system, as it is clear to me the points system is causing some issues.

But still, Boogie Mode has been enhanced!

After preliminary test runs with the heaters on a simple switch with good results, today I added the electronic thermostat to control the heaters as engine heat builds. Mounted the thermostat in the tool tray, alongside my cigarette power socket and USB outlet.

The upper number in red is the temperature measured by the thermocouple inside the insulated shroud, the lower number in blue is the target temperature to turn the heaters off. Tried 120 degrees to start with, think I will bump it up 5-10. It also has a small light that shows when the circuit is energized.

Thinking that some of my running issues are ignition based, I will be installing a Dyna S ignition, and possibly upgrading the coils.

More improvement! After seeming to get nowhere with my adjustments, I thought maybe the electric choke was fighting me. Disconnected the power, then rotated the choke counter-clockwise until the choke blade fell where the motor idled nicest. Verified the that choke blade would open up fully under higher revs.

Remarkable change! Stable idle, great performance!

Electronic ignition should arrive today!

Dyna S and Dyna 3ohm coils installed.

Fuel mileage is at 29.3 mpg.
Was running a 55 idle jet, installed a 45 today, see what mpg that brings.

Rock solid 1K rpm idle after 30-45 seconds from starting, smooths as the bike warms up.
Stuttering in the 1K-3K range is gone, pulls nicely from lower rpms.

Didnt like a low rpm stumble that came with the 45 idle jet, didnt bother checking mileage.
Installed a 50 idle jet today, stumbles at low rpm slightly when cold, but smooths out after it warms up.

Mileage test this weekend, when I take off for a mini trip, Charleston SC - Cherokee NC - Blowing Rock NC - Charleston SC.

Little bit of Blue Ridge Parkway with some friends who are going the distance of the BRP and Skyline Parkway over the course of a week.

About 1000 miles total Friday-Sunday
Trip up to Cherokee NC running about 75mph, about 31.5 mpg, until I got off the slab where it jumped to 35 mpg.
Back onto some hilly slab, dropped back to 30.5 mpg.

The trip on the BRP was at a leisurely pace, getting between 34.6 and 36.3 mpg.

The trip to Charleston SC from Blowing Rock NC, I dialed the speed back a bit. I had had to adjst the carb for altitude, and was adjusting it back on the way down. Speeds around 65 mph, got about 35 mpg.

Thinking I have a lean situation when on the main jet, difficulty hold a speed and blued mufflers.
Replace the 127.5 main jet with a 130, see how that goes.
Initial ride says gitty-up-go mode likes the 130!

Have a trip from Charleston SC to Stone Mt GA coming up in one of the first 3 weekends in August.
Mostly slab, but will include a section of local roads for some variation in fuel mileage testing.

Short term impression is that I will install a 132.5 main jet after the trip, as I get the feeling I am still relying too much on the WOT enrichening circuit. I think that I will get better performance, economy and stable power by running richer on the jet and easing up on the WOT circuit.

Ran a tank through with a 130 jet. Much easier to hold a given speed, and the muffler section I removed the bluing from remained clean! Forgot to reset my odo, so no mpg number. Guess I will just have to run another tank of fuel through it...!

Have a 132.5 jet on the way for testing.

Plan is that once I get the main jet size sorted, I will then have a look at the auxiliary jet {WOT circuit} if necessary after some plug chop tests. I expect to lean out the WOT a little.

Todays ride gave a solid 35mpg over 92 miles.

Picking up the tiniest hesitation just off idle, needs a tiny adjustment of the carb screws, The 130 jet has made a noticable increase in the midrange, then drops off slightly before the WOT circuit kicks in. Holding speeds is much easier now.

I think the 132.5 will fill in that slight drop off before WOT circuit.

I figure to settle in on whatever main jet works best. Might even get some of those jet drills to make one in between the standard sizes. Work out the possible WOT jet changes, then come up with a log of carb screw settings for altitude,'

excellent thread.

Kit was about $500 {manifold and carb}
Grip heaters, 2 pair, $56
Electronic thermostat to control heaters, about $10
Foam rubber insulation roll, about $12
Jets, about $10 a pop for the 1/2 sizes and the idle jets
Also bought 2 jet kits used, mains and WOT, about $100.

Just installed a 132.5 main, and it brought performance up nicely.
Planning a 100 ride for the weekend for mpg measurement.

Thinking I will be leaning out the WOT jet and then selecting from the 130 or 132.5 main.
I am also fitting a manual choke using the stock cable. Even in the warm southern summer, the bike is a bit cantankerous from cold, but idles beautifully at a touch over 1Krpm once fully warm.

Some minor tweaks of the screws, and putting together a log for adjusting the screws for altitude, guess it will be time to ride...!

Got an app that is supposed to measure 0 - 60 times, should be interesting to see how it compares to the 5.2 second I have read is the stock bikes time back in the day.

Made two mileage runs this weekend. Friday night, a spirited run, and Sunday a normal cruise. All on the 132.5 main

Spirited run, 29 mpg.
Cruise, 34 mpg.

Was getting 35 mpg with the 130 main, but performance was a little off.

Seems that WOT circuit is dumping a ton of fuel. Gonna lean it out, I expect better mpg and a boogie mode that would make Sochiro grin!
