Trying to revive a 1980 Gl1100I. EMPI 34 PICT 3 single carb. Got it running, but won't idle. Wondering...
1. Cleaned the carb pilot circuits, they actually seemed pretty clean already. What jets and pilot screw settings are successful on these? The way I found it:
Main 127.4
Air (big) screw 13/4 turns out
Fuel (small) screw 3 turns out
Air correction jet/emulsion tube is size 70.
There are ports/jets on the other side but the small one has a brass plug covering a jet, and the other is plugged with a nail. see pic.
2. Throttle cable is broken, what to use because the barrel on the stock cable is too small and not enough exposed wire, can you somehow cut the jacket back, or fab a bracket? Would like to see a pic of someone's setup. I have the manifold style runners, not the X type.
Thanks,
Greg - Milwaukee WI USA

Re: single carb questions on 1980 GL1100I
IF it were me I’d ditch the single carb setup and go with the oe carbs, if setup correctly your bike will never run better. More power, more torque and much better throttle.
BUT, IF you’re stuck on a single carb setup you might give some thought to a different carb like maybe a holley 2 bbl or maybe a 2bbl throttle body fuel injection, both more tunable. My exposure to any of the carb conversions on a wing is that none have run all that great, I wouldn’t waste any time on any of them, my opinion !

I always hate to point people at a different site, but on this subject, especially with the specific single carb conversion you have, classicgoldwings.com has a ton of information and threads on the subject in their single carb conversion forum.

Re: single carb questions on 1980 GL1100I
I started with the 34, ended up with a Solex 30. My thread on the subject my help. I think the smaller bore of the 30 simplifies the idle issues, had a rock solid 1Krpm before a red light runner stopped my jetting of the mid range, that air bleed and fuel adjustment screw that you pictured. Still was a fine running bike, put over 4K miles this year.
I also found that heating the manifold using heat scavenged from the coolant crossover tube helped tremendously. The manifold gets noticeably cooler when it runs, saw it when I attached a thermometer/thermostat to the manifold to control grip heaters I wrapped around the manifold outlet tubes.
