I wonder if part of it is we changed our riding habits as we got older. My first bikes, 500 twins, a 500 single, RD400 were all a blast to ride, tach bumping off redline, always just the right gear for the job, had all the power in the world. Once I started commuting all the time on my bike, (30K miles per year), those bikes were tiring to ride. Got a XS1100 through a trade, and it was the perfect commuter bike. In traffic? just leave it in second or third, let the torque do the work. Long day in the saddle? now I can stretch out. Still love my "smaller" bikes, just not for commuting.
