I need 1975 GL1000 owners help please

#1

Post by pistolpete »

Hello Guys,

I am soon to update my "Little known history of the GL1000" very soon and I'm looking for 1975s that were built in February of that year.
Before my hard drive crashed in 2007 I had documentation showing the ones that were made near the first day of Feb. That work is lost so I hope that you owners of the Feb bikes would help me out.

As you are looking at the serial plate on the left side of the steering head you will see the VIN number (frame number) GL1-1xxxxxx. In the upper right corner you will find the month of manufacture.

Also, if your number is quite low such as GL1-1000200 or higher and yours was made in January 75, I would like that number as well.

The highest number made in Jan and the lowest number made in February will receive a free cap button install for your respective bikes.

Thank You in advance for all your help.

Cyborg,
USA models were Honda's primary target, but any units made in those two months would be great information to know.

That's what the ID plate says.

Thank you Roncar.
This is good news.
Hopefully I can fill in some blanks if I receive encouraging news on the Feb/Jan units.

Robin,
Actually this number probably over a month later means Honda made over 6000 wings.
From Dec to March only made 2660.
I also found a June bike has serial 15290. Perhaps 4000 over two months later.
You guys are a great help.
Thanks

I love looking at the "puzzle" of early Goldwing manufacturing. Just to add a sorta off topic observation:

1975 #15290 (of 20691 total) was manufactured 6/75.
1976 #10653 (of 41275 total) was manufactured 8/75.

1. Between some time in June 1975 and some time in August 1975, some 16000 (5401 75's and 10653 76's) Goldwings were manufactured.

2. That's more than December 1974 to sometime in June 1975.

3. By August 1975, more than 25% of the 1976 production run had been manufactured.(????)

4. Must have been a BUSY summer in Hondaland.

On a side note, I have 2 ID tags with May manufacturing dates for the following years model. 1979 GL1000 5/78 and 1981 CB900C 5/80. Obviously the change over to the next model year is not a date carved in stone.

Roncar,
Yes and I believe the 76 LTDs were also made during that period as well.
I believe that the actual production began in earnest in late Jan 75 with a 20 to 30 day lag while parts were being delivered.
We will see if the Jan/Feb info bears this out.
