Another project!
because my 3 wings wasn't enough..
Actually this is a surprise for my son. He is in his last year of university and his summer job is a 30 minute drive from home.
She who must be obeyed gave up her Terrain the last time he worked there and wasn't to happy because she doesn't like driving my truck.
So..we decided that he needed his own vehicle..
My brother and his son between them have owned close to 10 jetta's over the years and he swears by them. Both are heavy equipment mechanics so they know of what they speak.
this is a 1 owner 2008 that has been well maintained and not in Nova Scotia to long so it hasn't been exposed to our salt encrusted roads..
Known issue is a seal in the rack is leaking so the rack will be replaced. it has a crack in the windshield and some surface rust above the windshield. That tells me someone scratched the paint replacing a previous windshield.
It should give him many years of trouble free transportation..it has low mileage for a jetta.
My son was never really interested in anything mechanical..like most kids in his generation his interest was in gaming..
I'm looking forward to introducing him to greasy hands and skinned knuckles like my dad did with me.

Re: Another project!
That looks different to what we get over here. I Think that model over here was called Bora.
VW is the biggest selling car brand over here. They have about 10.5% of the market.
If you add sales from the other VW brands it comes to over 24%.

This is the "city" model. My brother said it was a failed marketing attempt to make the 06 more like the previous MK4.Liam wrote:That looks different to what we get over here. I Think that model over here was called Bora.

Right now I have $1700 tied up in it..so even with replacing the steering rack it will be cheap transportation.

Re: Another project!
Well..I dug into the leaking rack today.. and discovered it isn't the rack leaking, it's the return hose.
A considerably cheaper fix than replacing the rack.

Yes it is! Replaced the rack in my 2K Golf a couple years ago...the high pressure side is easier to fish out than that rack!

I'm going to replace both lines while I'm "there" so I'm going to drop the k member down to give me more room to work.wingrider wrote:Yes it is! Replaced the rack in my 2K Golf a couple years ago...the high pressure side is easier to fish out than that rack!

Re: Another project!
Well after getting a good look at the lines..the pressure line is in good shape.
Here is the "leaking seal" in the rack.

Re: Another project!
power steering hose replaced..on to the next issue..
It had a burned out low beam head light and I pulled he bulb to see what type it was..and couldn't get it to stay in the headlight. Using a mirror to see as much as I could of the rear of the headlight assembly it appeared a tab was broken off.
Sooooo..this is what it took to get the head light assembly off..
The good news..the headlight assembly is okay..just an extremely finicky process to get the bulb back in.

Re: Another project!
I can sympathize with the light. It was miserable to change the low beam lamp on my Daughters Ford fusion. Wheel well needed to come down to access it. It has a small access hatch but it is in the wrong place to be useful

Re: Another project!
Hate dealing with Headlights nowadays. Some are simple and some are a nightmare. I looked at upgrading the lights on my Ram and to do it properly the buckets have to be replaced at the tune of $250 each then you still have to purchase the new bulb system.

Re: Another project!
upgrading to HID? Yes..unless you have projection style headlights they aren't worth the money or effort. I bought a pair for my daughters CRv and they were super bright but had zero pattern to the beam. I took them back out.Whiskerfish wrote:Hate dealing with Headlights nowadays. power steering line replaced, test drive completed...

Re: Another project!
I forgot to post the power steering line saga..
I ordered one from a Volkswagen dealer my brother has been buying from for 20 + years. it is in the city..which is a 2 hour drive for me but I was taking my son back to university so it worked out good.
I picked up the line, came home and installed it the next day. Everything went great, started the car and it is leaking around the banjo bolt..so I snug it up..still leaking..tighten it more then I should..still leaking.
Talk to my brother and he said either you got dirt between the bolt head and washer..or the rack is cracked where the banjo bolt screws in.
The line came with a plastic cap on it which I left on until I had the line ready to bolt in. The space I had to see what I was doing was extremely small, like when I put my hand in to insert the bolt..I couldn't see what I was doing small.
SoooooI remove the bolt, pull my hand out and see something on the banjo fitting that doesn't look right, so I remove the line...
this is what I find..
Ya..I wasn't impressed..
It will cost me $60 in gas to return the line..
So I did what I was going to do in the first place..order one from Rock Auto. Delivered to my door it was cheaper then any I could find locally, fit like a glove and no leaks..
