How far is to far gone...engine head

#1

Post by wingrider »

Hey all,

I am slowly building an engine for a boat that I will be building. The engine is a 400 Mopar turned into a 470 stroker.

I have been looking for a set of heads, and was told that a set of 516 closed chamber Mopar heads would do me well.

I have located a set, but question if I should even take the time to look at them. Figured a picture or two will at least get a chuckle out of a few of you.

I figure the one is salvageable, but not sure about the other.

Why do you think?

wipe em off with an oily rag and bolt them on..
in my humble opinion..what you will pay an engine shop to "save" those would put a big down payment on a set of aluminum heads..
will this be a fresh water boat?

She will be in a fresh water boat, with a closed cooling system.

I figured I would do my best to clean them up if I got them, but worry about that one seat where it appears the exhaust valve is missing. On the plus side, the exhaust valves get replaced with a bit larger one for my application, so perhaps the seat is just right!

I have gone back and forth if I should do iron heads, or spring for the aluminum....

If it is a closed cooling system I would go aluminum if it's in the budget. Better performance and a considerable weight reduction.
Unfortunately my boat is not a closed cooling system and it is a salt water boat..plus it's a v6. lol
you gotta post a pic of the boat now.. ;)
This is my money pit.. another work in progress project. lol

That is modeled loosely after one....it is actually a Glen-L Monte Carlo. Mine will be slightly different, but the picture is close enough to what it will be.
