My daughter brought home a very dirty car from the great state of Michigan.. It was Mom and dad's1997 Buick lesabre and a very pretty champagne color. Parking outside under the trees has taken its toll in that there are dark deposits that look like shotgun mold on the paint. I went over the car at least half a dozen times with dish detergent in a bucket constantly applied with a soft brush before the 'mold' was finally at bay. I was not happy, and told her that she better mark this as the last time I would ever wash or help her wash such a dirty car.
I then showed her exactly how you can wash a car without a hose and just a bucket, with two buckets being better. then comes out the tire shine to remove any trace of soap residue. Tire shine and a very damp microfiber really makes the paint & chrome look good and is painless as part of drying off a car. Murphy's Oil Soap is a great choice in bucket washing because it leaves a nice shine behind.
I have expected a lot from her over the years and she has an excellent work ethic. This car only books out at $800, but that is no excuse to have it looking like it did.
Maybe you guys have some secrets to help motivate your kids on maintenance. I am all ears.
Now my daughter has no excuse for a dirty car

I found my son suddenly became interested in how to fix things when he bought his own house.... but it may have been when he told me a roofer wanted $1500 to put vents on his house, and I told him I would do it for $500

Funny how graduation from the university sort of wakes them up to the "real world". My son has always been kind to his vehicles; quads, dirt bikes, Baja bugs, etc. Toys. But, he recently bought a house after having graduated last year. He's now beginning to understand how the world works and what a buck actually is. How "real life" works. Finally.
