Hey Brant...I have been looking at lanterns on the internet, and am getting somewhat overwhelmed and confused. Just wanting to maybe purchase a couple of beginners pieces. There is such a condition, and price fluctuation. Could you mentor a beginner, and direct me as far as condition versus price?

I finally picked up a 1987 Coleman lantern model 288 and just like our old wings the fuel can get very ugly exactly like our carbs. Smells the same and is just as hard to clean out. And I see this is another hobby one can get immersed in. Fortunately they take up a lot less space.

Hearing a lantern running brings back memories of being in a 5 man arctic tent on winter warfare training trying to get some sleep..
Great memories except for the whole getting into a cold sleeping bag..then getting out of a warm one at o:dark thirty to work my shift on fire watch..

Re: lanterns ?
Hey I'd be glad to share what I've learned. If you do facebook there are several Coleman Collector groups. The most common lanterns to start with are the 220 series. They are "common" lanterns. 220 F, 220H, 220J. I try to not pay more than $25 for these, but if in good shape, has the original globe, maybe a case or funnel included, pay a little more. E bay is really jacking some prices up. Try to look on craigslist, facebook has a market place you can look there. I havent had much luck at flea markets or local thrift but always a possibility.mopehead440 wrote:Hey Brant...I have been looking at lanterns on the internet, and am getting somewhat overwhelmed and confused. The more desirable lanterns are of course older and harder to find. 242, 220 B, 220 C. 200a are little red single mantel lanterns, not all that hard to find but more desirable.
In the end they are like goldwngs, worth what you are willing to pay. For me its the enjoyment and not the value.

I been collecting a little over a year and this is about 1/2 of my collection. The other half need a little more work to run.

Thats what I keep saying, takes up less space. Now lanterns have taken over the north end of my shop and I moved in a work bench specifically for lanterns.salukispeed wrote:I finally picked up a 1987 Coleman lantern model 288 and just like our old wings the fuel can get very ugly exactly like our carbs. Re: lanterns ?
Thanks, Brant! I like collections. Your post kinda sparked an interest, and I been looking. Might just jump in, and accumulate a couple pieces, just to play with. What about a parts source, I'll bet you have a treasure trove of parts and supplies. Haven't noticed a lot of parts on Internet. I may vear away from Ebay, and look elsewhere. Been looking at camp stoves, also. Just for kicks and giggles. Thanks for the advice. Danny Mac.

Re: lanterns ?
One Very good source is Mike from oldcolemanparts.co. and the group at colemancollectorsforum.com. Good knowledgeable group a bit like NGW. Mike set me up with all the parts I need to refurbish my Rogers M1950 small single burner military stove and now my Coleman 288 double mantle lantern. FYI,old Coleman parts store is closed for the Christmas holiday but will return after.

The 288 lantern works after only a bit of tinkering and cleaning, Just like old wing carbs take your time and go slowly

Bought my first one, and got it in yesterday. Looks fairly nice, and will serve as a start. Wanted to start on the low end, and I did, but EBAY watch list is full as a tick! Thinkin a 200A next, just to add a little color to the shelf! Or maybe a Christmas!
