Testing a Voltage Regulator

#1

Post by cafton10 »

I have no head light, no tail light or brake light, no hand warmers, no thumb warmer. All fuses check fuses check good with a continuity tester. New battery shows 12.5 volts when not running and 14.3 volts when running so I assume the stator is working. Internet search suggests a bad voltage regulator. If I unplug the regulator leads to the lights and accessories (3) can I test each while running or will this cause problems somewhere? If I remove the voltage regulator completely is there an ohms test? Or can I attach to a 12v source and check each output plug? Thanks for any help.

If the battery is showing 14.3 volts with the engine started, I would surmise that the RR is working well. You also have power through the ignition switch to the electrical system. The fuses may check good, but it is the wiring that may be the issue. I would check the circuits in question for power. If there is power at the fuse block - in/out - for the circuits in question, check further down the line. Just a thought.

Thanks for that. Headed to the garage now. Problem on snowmobiles is everything is very tight. Have to take off the muffler to get to the voltage regulator. Or remove the headlights to get to one of the fuses.

Forgot to mention grounds. Killer issue on small machines/equipment. Understand the amount of room.

Did they also mention that there is a relay in the console that is prone to failure?
There are two in there and are identicle so you can swap them around to test.
There is also a known ssue with the MPEM "key" not making good contact that will cause run and light issues.

Relay is correct. There are two identical. I switched them and the starter won't activate. Switched them back and started up immediately. I'll pick one up tomorrow and be ready for next season.
And just for fun started prepping bikes today!!

New relay in place. Up and running! Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. Still curious how to test the relay. In another application there might be just one.

think of a relay as a magnetic switch... there is the power to the magnet (and out the other side) and then the MAIN power in and out. when things are on both the main in and out should light up a test light. If it doesn't the relay is bad

Thank you for that information. I saved the old one, painted it red, and now I'll play with this new information.
