How to replace the driveshaft

#1

Post by kjeldbh »

My bike is a GL1000 '77 with original mufflers.

Last year the union joint part of the drive shaft did break. I bought a new one and new cir clips from CMS:
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-gl1000-gold- ... F++22.html

This is how the driveshafts looks:

Next was to get the old one out and replace it with the new one. I had some trouble doing that, because I did follow the description from the shopmanual, which says that you have to remove the rear swing arm. I could not loosen the pivot bolts, and was looking for other ways, and managed to get the drive shaft out without removing the swing arm.

I removed the rear wheel and I removed the mufflers, too, which makes it possible to lower the swing arm so much, that I could pull the drive shaft out in the front end between the engine and the swing arm, an replace it with the new one.

The picture shows the new drive shaft on its way in place:

From this I have learned, in order to prevent an unplanned replacement of the drive shaft, it is highly recommended to follow Randakks inspection guide :

So no pics? It's useless without them.
