A tip for removing those pesky bearing races

#1

Post by Easter »

We have a lot of heavy machinery repaired by a couple of mechanics--real mechanics, the kind that if the part isn't available they will make one on the mill or adapt one from something else.

Anyway, they have helped me a few times with motorcycle issues and their simple solution to removing stuck races, especially in blind recesses like the swing arm, is to weld a bead on the inside of the race where the bearing would sit. This causes the metal to shrink and the race will simply fall out.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:
