Speedometer jumping around and making whining noise....
82 GL 1100I
Sometime while riding the speedometer starts to jump around(not displaying the correct speed) and makes a whining noise. Only whines when it is jumping around....
Does it just need tightening up? Or what?
If it needs to be tightened, how would I go about do that?
Thanks for the help guys/gals!!!!

are there any legal restrictions to replacing a speedo? the mileage will be all wrong, huh?
if someone swaps out with one that reads 19K and the previous read 85K...
then, heaven forbid, it gets sold... and unfortunately forgotten that the speedos were swapped. not that anyone here would intentionally do that, I'm just curious.
me? I'm riding mine either 'til it rusts apart under me or I die... of old age!!

speedo question
I am not sure about titles in your state but in NYS they ask if the mileage is correct when transfered. In NYS I think you can check the speedometer is NOT correct and that is it (the buyer signs this too and is "warned"). I would keep the old speedo and if/when you part with it, give it to the person who is buying it as semi-"proof". I guess though technically anyone could buy a speedo with less miles and say they switched them but on the NYS title you are swearing the mileage is not correct by your signature. I would check you local law or look on the back of the title if your state requires one.

Re: Speedometer jumping around and making whining noise....
My speedometer did the same thing whining noise and jumpimg around. I would like to replace it with an aftermarket speedometer since the one that broke was one I got off ebay from another gl1100i. Any suggestions for aftermarket speedometers?

Re: Speedometer jumping around and making whining noise....
Hmmm well I've had the same issue. The speedo then stopped working entirely soon after. I replaced it with a 79 speedo on my 81 (couldn't find an 81 that's working, any ideas??) and the cable. The new speedo then had the same problem 500 miles after.
I'm thinking that the winding mechanism thing thats on the front tire might have a bad bearing. Any thoughts anyone?

Re: Speedometer jumping around and making whining noise....
There really are no bearings in the spedo drive at the wheel. It is well greased and basically is bushings/sleeves that hold the gears in contact with each other. They come apart and can be re-greased. My experience has been that the bronze bushings in the spedo stem that the shaft spins in dry out after many years and needs to be re lubed. You can get oil to the cable end but It is very difficult to get oil up to the inner bushing area where the trouble often is. I took an 1/8 in drill bit and drilled perpendicular and straight into the threaded stem a little bit at a time, just above where the cable attaching nut stops and the instant It touched the shaft I stopped drilling and this gave me a mid point to add a drop or two of 10W oil and let it sit and occasionally turning the shaft with a small screwdriver or end of the cable. Too much oil can wick up into the spedo and discolor the face if left upside down. So a little oil but in the right place. There may be a better oil that someone can suggest But I used non detergent 10W I had. I have had good luck with this so long as the bushings are not too damaged or have slop.
