I think I'll be doing this on my 92,000 mile '78.

Thanks for the write-up!!!!!

So, what would be the fix after another 50,000+ miles?

New shafts, if available?
Used shafts in better condition, if available?
Build up & re-machine existing shafts, if affordable?
Could the shafts be machined smooth, with the rockers re-bushed and honed to fit?

Does this Happen to the GL1200 as well ? and if so is there any difference in proceedure ? I got the bike with 153,000 on it and i have added something like 5k in the last 7 monthes I do hear a slight tap tap noise but its not real loud. I assumed it was a exhause leak at the header to adapter pipe on my bike (i have harley take offs on it) with no gasket. There is a little smoke that puffs from it when i start the bike on a cold morning and have the choke on.

I'd tend to think that's an exhaust noise. The 1200's have hydraulic lifters.

Isn't that the the restrictor orifice, at the head gasket joint, is for? To maintain oil pressure in the bottom end?
