If the emblem is anything like the ones on my 1200, there's probably pins (which you can see) along with some double-stick foam tape keeping it in place. The way I did mine was I took all of them off- slowly spun the connectors off the pins with a set of needle-nose pliers, then heated up the badge (CAREFULLY) with a heat gun to help soften the tape. Then I (slowly) worked under each badge, pulling it away. Once everything gets repainted, they're going back on with some fresh foam tape which, I'm HOPING, should be good as new.

Personally? I'd take it off. You're biggest worry is breaking the plate in half- if the pins come off, they're more for alignment than anything. Just take it slow and it should be okay.

I tried needle nose pliers on the pins but they tricky little devils to manipulate. I will keep at it.

In the meantime I built a paint booth in my garage figuring, a 7' x 5' x 7' contraption in my way will motivate me to go and do this job!

Lucien is correct, the trick is to unscrew the disk while pulling up on it gently.

I twist the little washers off as well. The two I removed did not have tape under them. if the pins break, no big, just epoxy the emblem back on.
I found the end of the internet

Thanks! I can't wait to use it! In the mean time I'm stuck in sanding purgatory.

I picked up some Evercoat Kitty Hair. Named rather well. Its a putty with lots of fiberglass strings in the mixture. My $.02... wear a breather! Oh and $.01 more... don't use too much of it...

...like i did: crying1

The good news is those faux tank halves are perma-bonded like nobody's business. Also, I lost about five pounds while filing and sanding. The bad news is it took about two hours to correct my over-exuberance going from those before to after shots. That 3M eraser wheel is about 1/2 the size of when I started. Oye.

I hope you put fiberglass or kitty hair on the back side as well. Looks a lot like my first experience with drywall plaster, put on five gallons and sand off four, then put on some more to fill the low spots!

@sunnbobb, I took your point about the goldWing plate and just broke the pins loose, no big deal. I can epoxy it back if I want. The emblem off my bike is pretty dinged up actually so I may end up not using it.

@Easter, I took your point as well and did use Kitty Hair on the reverse side as well (not as much though, thankfully).

Now I am about to buy primer and paint and I'm wondering how much I'll need. Should I just go ahead and buy one gallon of each? @ ~$60 a gallon for primer and who knows for paint, I don't want to over buy.

a gallon seems like a bit of over kill. on a naked bike a qt is usually enough. also don't forget the clear

What did you use to make your spray booth, BTW? I kind of want to steal your idea. :)

Me likes the home grown spray booth too. Looks like you used PVC?

I used to date a Bagger from a Cafe...she was a two bagger.
But then I'm a three bagger.

Thanks for the notes about the booth. I wish I could take credit for the idea but i copied the design from a web site. It was about $50 in materials from home depot (i actually recommend lowes because their fittings are better, at least that was my experience -- i had to make a second trip):

10x 10' 1/2" pvc pipe
Assorted fittings
20" box fan
20" x 20" hvac filter
10' x 25' plastic sheet

The dimensions of mine were figured so that I could cover 3 sides with one roll of plastic, and also allow me to walk around the black & decker workmate. I plan to cover that and use it as a paint stand. This booth is approx 7'w x 5'd x 7'h.

In related news I spent $40 on primer + activator + urethane reducer. I'm going to use a 5 Star xTreme product ... link here. The sales clerk echo'd comments about a quart being enough for this job. I could have saved a few bucks by going to Amazon.com but instead I purchased at NCS. They have been pretty helpful to me so wanted to give them my business. Amazon gets enough of my business!

<sigh> I still have a LOT more prep work to do though before i can fire up the HF paint gun. :|

Broke out the power sander today... 180 grit and the pinstripes just melted away.

Most all of the parts are sanded, filled and ready for primer!
