Talk to strangers!
I used to have a GL1100 that got naked and cafeed a couple of years ago. A thread about that is somewhere around here on the forum "Bamse the Ice Cream Racer" or something like that. I liked that bike but someone liked to buy it.
Anyway, this summer a man on a bicycle skidded in to my driveway hauling he had looked for me a while. I asked him why, and he sad he knew I was totally in to goldwings (I did not know that myself, so that was exiting). He then told me he had 1975 gl1000 that he wanted me to have. I followed him back to his house just a couple of hundred meters away in to at tent shed in his yard. I found this... Cx500, NSR125, CBX550, GT250, RD500, GL1000 and more. Atleast 25 bikes, mostly 80's but a few from the 70's too.
We pulled it out in the sun It was stored in that tent for ten years but looked ok. He told med he drove it there and had plans to restore it to it's former glory. We made a deal, hooked up the bags, and I pushed the bike home to clean it off. Back at home I saw what ten years in a tent can do to the lower details on a bike, spokes were rusty, center stand too, but over all a good project bike. The next few days the P.O came by with more and more stuff he found in his house that he had bought for the bike during the years. A good used seat, a brand new center stand, all kinds of bis and pieces for engine renovation, Haynes manual, Honda work shop manual and parts list. My goal now is to restore this bike as it came from the factory 1975, candy blue green an beautiful.
This can happen when you talk with strangers.
To be continued...

Wow! Some guys have all the luck. That looks really nice - and a perfect candidate for restoration.

Re: Talk to strangers!
So, after gently going through the starting sequence for a long sitting bike I got it running. Not very clean but running. A running bike means I could start the real process of restoring by tearing it apart.
Engine needs painting, frame needs painting, panels needs painting, everything needs painting. Leaving the block as is but heads off for check up and lapping valves.- Attachments

Re: Talk to strangers!
New brake parts came with the bike but everything had to be taken apart, cleaned and painted before assembly.

Wow. Had a couple of old wings given to me, but nowhere as nice as that one. Looks to me like you are "totally in to goldwings".

Re: Talk to strangers!
I did'nt get the bike for free, we made a fair deal for both me and the seller. All the extra parts was a great bonus. One big issue is the exhaust, a lot of rust an a few holes. But I think I got it working.

Re: Talk to strangers!
Things are a bit slow att the moment. Preparing a few bits and pieces by removing rust and applying etch primer. Foot pegs, side stand and faux tank inside thingy
A lot of time spent on internet trying to find a modern equivalent to Hondas old paint codes. I think I've found one by PPG but searching for a Standox paint code. So if anyone know I'd like to know.
I recieved an order from David Silver's today with new spokes for the rear wheel. I've built a jigg and now I have to measure the offset before tearing the wheel apart for refubishing an relacing. Wish me luck on that one!

Re: Talk to strangers!
I got a couple of hours in the cave last night to clean and disassemled the carb rack.
All parts neatly sorted in separate bins. I will borrow an ultrasonic cleaner for carb parts but how about put the carb rack halves in the cleaner? Is there any bad things that can happen?

Re: Talk to strangers!
I put all parts in the ultrasonic cleaner. Just be warned. Depending on what you use as your "concoction", leaving parts in too long can cause them to turn dark. Even black.
But, you don't "have" to use an ultrasonic cleaner. Time with carb cleaner and compressed air can give you the same results.

Re: Talk to strangers!
Todays work: cleaning and painting thermostat housing, pipes and fittings. Starter got a lick of primer and ignition points cover too.
Right head cam and valves disassembled and cleaning process started. Soaked in petrol over night.
Someone on some forum made a smart alternative from a steel pipe with an opening in the side to release the valve springs. I made one of those and got the job done.
