New fork tubes
The fork tubes on my 79 are REALLY bad. It looks like someone used a big pipe wrench on them???
I am not opposed to doing something different if new tubes are overpriced.
Just looking for ideas.
Thanks. Dave

Put a post in the wanted section looking for forks. Someone on here may have a good set to sell.

Re: New fork tubes
You can pimp your fork tubes with bondo and paint them.

Lotsa forks on eBay. The 78/9s are different from the earlier 1000s though.

That depends on if he needs the complete fork or just the upper tube. Upper tubers are the same. Lowers are different.

Re: New fork tubes
If the pipe marks never contact the seal I'd just polish them up with emery cloth and put them back into service.

Re: New fork tubes
The pipe marks will contact the seal as they are right above them now. I got a quote from forks by frank and they wanted 338.00 PLUS shipping. I paid less than that for the whole bike. Sounds like a price for BMW parts

They are new though. Looks like no luck with the wanted section here. Did you look on ebay?

Re: New fork tubes
Your less than $338 bike may not really have been such a bargain after all. Perhaps you can get lucky and find a good set of used fork tubes from a reliable bike breaker.leggman wrote:The pipe marks will contact the seal as they are right above them now. Re: New fork tubes
It really is turning into a money pit. Both tires need replacing, the water pump has play in it, and all the brake lines are shot.
I might do all that to find out the motor or trans is no good. Deciding now whether to continue or not. I have two good bikes to ride but they are not "wings"

Re: New fork tubes
Hey Leggman -
If you paid less than a set of fork tubes for your bike, I guess I am not surprised that it needs some things! Tires and brakes are immediately on the check list for any old bike IMHO.
As for the forks, if no one here can help, here is a inexpensive set on eBay that looks to be in decent shape: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-Honda-GL10 ... 2f&vxp=mtr
If it were me, I would focus on getting the motor running before proceeding.
What is the condition of the motor? Mileage? Does it turn over? Have compression?

Re: New fork tubes
On a new to me bike I will always test fire the engine and insure it runs on all cylinders before I spend an other penny on it.

Re: New fork tubes
+1 on test fire of motor.
Brother RAT and I have come up with over the years and many bike builds. That you have about 2500.00 in a running "no worries to the other coast" bike. So can buy on the cheap and pour some bucks into it, or buy one already done. There are always guys that get on for pennies and wipe the dust off and ride, but I need to know that I won't be walking any time soon...IMHO.
