I got the cover off with a little help from a two pound hammer and a chisel ( I am putting on new bolts anyway)
It was pretty nasty inside so I am glad I am doing this.

A chisel is what I and my buddies always used--when Nixon was president. All the screws looked like that on those 305s. :-D

OK, I have a few questions. I have a day or two before I get the bolts from robin to put this back together so I am in the process of scraping gaskets and spray painting. I have a few questions.
Should I use any gasket goop on the gasket that goes between the cover and the block? If so what kind?
should I put anything on the new oil pump seal before I install it?
What would the bolt torque be for the water pump/front cover bolts?
Thanks again for the help. Dave

I used a few thin dabs of rtv silicone on the engine block to hold the gasket in place.
I put vasaline on the water pump o-ring before I installed it.

Read post number 34. It tells you to look at my thread for the bolt kits. Even has a link. Read it for a couple recommendations.

I don't use RTV on bike engines. Too much chance of it getting into an oil passage. I don't normally use anything on the cover gasket. But you could put some gaskacinch on to hold it in place.

So, I am finally ready to put the front cover back on and it has been probably 30 years since I did one of these so The big question of the day is does the front cover gasket go on dry or with some gasket goop. The old gasket sure didn't want to come off so I don't know.
Back in the day I would use some indian head gasket shellac but that was a long time ago and I am sure that stuff is outdated by now.
Thanks. Dave

Finally got the front of the motor buttoned back up with help from Robin 1731 and put new oil in. So far NO leaks. I will have to make three of the little washer thingies (collar, radiator setting) because I can only find one and that's probably all I had
to begin with. This is the bike that had a suzuki headlight on it.
Oh Well, at least some progress is being made.
