75 GL1000 Norway

#1

Post by MadsV »

Hello
Bought my GL1000 in Sweden 2016 and imported to Norway. Got it registered after going over the brakes and not really doing much to it. Was just going to ride it until winter and fix it up then. Soon found out that it was leeking from the weeping hole of course. So decided I just had to do the pump and timing belts right away.

So thats were its been since haha.. I had the new pump in and timing belts, started up then I saw coolant leakage from thermostat housing and on top of the engine, + there was a gnissing sound and i believe it was from the pump housing. After that I just lost all energy (and money) with all car projects on the side also. A year brake from it has got me going again, and I ordered a full gasket kit from Randakk, and sent my carbs to Pistol Pete so I dont have to think about them too.
I'll be getting the gasket kit tomorrow and will probably check the water pump installation again regarding the gnissing sound and change gaskets. Hopefully I will get it running ok before the winter!

Some pictures! Its just been standing dismantled, hope I remember where everything goes.. this forum sure helps

Welcome from the UK, you have found the right place to get help and encouragement. Look up some of the threads, especially mine, to see what problems we've faced and overcome, but if you have any questions just ask and someone will be along to help.

More than one has thought it was a leaking thermostat only to find it was a loose fitting upper radiator hose clamp. On top of the engine is often the cross tubes which use o-rings to seal.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thanks, I should check that out! Perhaps it started there, and when I changed the thermostat it started leaking.

After watching many horrific pictures of the fuel gauge sender on many threads here, I had to take a look at mine. What joy it was!

That is a fine looking motorcycle and one very deserving of time (and money) spent.

That is because they are not "philips head", they are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard", a totally different animal.

+1 on the JIS. You would be wise to purchase a proper JIS screwdriver available on many sites including Amazon. I recently bought one with a couple of different size tips. The way they grip the JIS screw heads will save you from stripping screws on your MC in the future. Very different than using the old go to Phillips screwdriver

interesting that the thermostat housing had jis machine screws. They normally are 6mm bolts with a hex head. I wonder if some previous owner changed that

While I had all those parts off, I powder coated them

that is probably correct. they should have been attached with bolts, not machine screws. You can take a standard Phillips screw driver and flatten the point with a grinder. It never hurts to soak with something to help them come loose. I always put a thread coating to help them come loose the next time as well

I have put new seals in the pipes and thermostat housing, prepared new gaskets where they are needed. Just need the time now to install. Carburetors arrived at Pistol Petes, hoping it wont be too long until they are back.
Got my new seat today! had to test fit of course
