The pretty party continues. Tomorrow evening its pinstripe and clearcoat time.

And, the carbs are now mounted, but the cables are shot. Only the choke and clutch cables were replaced by the PO. So, it's off to the Local Bike Shops tomorrow to see what's available on short notice. I really want to head out on this bike on Tuesday.
It's nice to have a nice running Guzzi for a backup, but I've invested a bit in this beast by now, just to be slowed by a cable issue.
I could cannibalize the 78, but it seems a shame to do it. But, it could happen. I already have the old carrier/luggage rack mounted along with the Vetter bags from my first build. They actually bolt right up and look better on the 83. Hmm.
I'll probably steal the shorty windshield off the Virago. It lost a head and doesn't need a windshield when awaiting a transplant. :horse:

Amazing, I forgot that I already had a set of cables.
So, I'm all excited, ready to put the new cables on (I just happened to have a new set on the self!!!)
And I got to thinking, the PO said there were new belts, and a spare head came with the bike, maybe I shouldn't have trusted his word on the compression. Results
1- 135
2- 0
3- 130
4- who cares but 130
ARGHH !!!!!

Time to tear into the beast a bit further. I sure hope the piston and cylinder is OK. My local shop can get me new head gaskets by Monday if I get back to them by noon.

Gotta get to tearing down a side.

I'll let you know what I find tomorrow evening. I'm booked up to fix a dryer and get prep work done for tiling a kitchen counter and backsplash tomorrow. The old head comes off tomorrow evening.
The replacement is on the bench ready to tear apart and checked out.

Starter woes. The beast isn't engaging, the starter motor spins but doesn't engage. Hopefully the alternator doesn't need to be removed, and the clutch is just sticky. We can dream, can't we?
There's some pitting due to corrosion on the valve seats on the replacement head, but I should be able to lap them out.
I'll keep you all informed!

The new(er) head is on the bench today. I figure if I can get everything done now that I can in the heated shop, when I can chip the ice off the barn, and get the 83 back in the garage, it will be warm enough to get back on the project.

Time to get at it again;
The heads are all shiny and ready to mount up.
The carbs are done and waiting for fuel.
THe garage is getting heat and AC (Motel wall unit)
And I am retiring (again).
I just am recovering from a pretty nasty bout of internal bleeding, so that I am getting a bit closer to normal. It's time.
Here is the sidecar that I am looking to hang in this. I love the little fins on the trunk space. How fifties can you get?

I should see it Mid August. It gets to fly to Sioux Falls from the Ukraine. I wish it came with a provenance. It might have an interesting history.

Well, the sidecar is in the back of the old Ford Expedition, all wrapped up in its shipping outfit.
It had been mounted on a Soviet era iZh. It has a ball and socket lower mounts for the subframe, missing the balls. Now to (1) determine whether or not to keep the ball/socket mounts and then (2) design and fit a subframe to the GL1100.
Some projects are to be long term, but the goal is to have something both secure and adjustable. More to follow (along with more pics!)

You wondered about the provenance... It looks new to me or is it fully restored?

It has been restored. I haven't fully unwrapped it (I need to clear out a spot in the garage, moving the mower into the spot now taken by the GL1100 in the barn). Then to get the bike's butt off to put on new tires and bearings, and to finish the head swap. After that I will be able to unwrap the "present" from the Ukraine. I found a picture of a similiar sidecar on its original mount, a 2 stroke 350cc Russian Jupiter2 motorcycle produced in the 70's.

Are you sure that sidecar will be heavy enough for a GoldWing? I was taught that a good rule of thumb is to look for a sidecar that weighs 25-35% of the weight of the bike so that it will be strong enough that its frame won't bend under the side loads generated during turning but not so heavy that it bends the bike's frame either.
