Nice cleanup. Like your carb intakes and front forks. Doing a bit of work on my '85 and decided to clan up the valve covers. Lots of elbow grease but came out quite nice - have to compound them before install:
Look forward to reading of your progress. Cheers"When writing the Story of your life, don't let anyone else hold the pen."

Painted with VHT Roll Bar paint and will clear coat once cured. Polishing the final drive. Thought about powder coating. I think I will run with polished for a while. should have if buffed out this week.

Nice work. Did you polish by hand or use a buffer?
did you dry sand or wet wand before polishing?

Nice job. Hard getting the original clear coat off parts - getting better at it as I do more pieces. I've been using #1 steel wool then a 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper to get the old clear coat off, then finish up with 600/800/1000/1200/1500/2000 wet/dry - since most parts are small not a lot of finish sanding to do. Adding a bench polisher to my tool collection to use the different compounds to bring out the shine. Finish using Mothers aluminum polish. Got the initial direction for doing this from Wilcoy02 on Classic, have modified to suit me. Cheers

Did my shiny parts last year. First removed the clear coat with an aerosol paint stripper (could also be a brush on type) then buffed with two 6" wheels (side by side) on an arbor using red buffing compound. That did a great job IMHO. They still look great, only thing I did after the buffing was wax the parts with a good quality wax. The bike is stored inside and kept clean after every ride tho.

is spraying with a clear coat a good way to keep these looking great. or is it best to just polish periodically?

Poishing occasionally is better than clear coat that can yellow with age if not prepped properly.l

i used bulldog adhesive promoter before i painted the plastic. sanded with 1000 grit paper cleaned off the part and applied 1 coat promoter waited 10 minutes and started with the VHT roll bar paint. high gloss. purchased model airplane white paint for lettering the indicator lights, turn, high beam, oil.... as well as ignition. will use the needle applicator for the paint to get a straight line. Chose not to use a brush for the line would not be straight. i may use 1/8 in. stencil rub on letter and then paint them white with the needle applicator. run a line of tape to keep letter straight. if the original letters are not to far got, i may chose to repaint free hand with the needle paint applicator. this is the first choice and if that fails go to rub on letters.

i had issue with using acetone on my plastic. it melted it when left on too long or used in high quantity. switching to Kleanstrip Prep-all and a tack rag. the first time i used the bulldog adhesive promoter i sprayed too little and it left an uneven coat that showed through the paint. i was able to locate 1/8 inch stencil for painting on amazon. looks like i will not need the run on letters. plan to sand these with 100-200 grit and clear coat. this one was done with a spray can. might switch to a harbor freight spray gun. saw many videos of these guns being used.
