Hi! 82 GL1100A
Hello all. Im Pete from Gulf Breeze, Fl. Right outside of Pensacola. I recently picked up an 82 GL1100A project. Looks like someone started to bob it and lost interest or got in over thier head. The bike is in pretty good shape, minus the front end which seems to have been left in the rain or exposed. Looks like the front brakes got water in them, and maybe the rear, but the rear disnt look so bad. Both master cylinders appear to be shot. Front suspension is shot, super squishy. Rear has air shocks but the hoses were cut and no air system on board anymore. Exhaust was hacked off at the muffler. Motor turns over nice, but didnt fire. It looks like it sat for a long while with ethonal in the carbs. Already disassembled and clean them, but need a full rebuild kit. The fuel tank is surprisingly super clean with no rust. All of the fuel hoses looked original, so theyll get replaced. Im going to continue on the Bobber effort and see where it goes. Cant wait to get her on the road!

Re: Hi! 82 GL1100A
Welcome from Wisconsin! Looks like a nice solid start. Just an FYI, the '82 has a few unique features from either the '80-81's or the '83, mostly in the brakes, and the Aspencade is different still. Caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits are '82 specific, and the Aspencade has 'vented' rotors as well. And from the pics, the rear shocks are aftermarket, not stock. As for the forks, you might check to see if the original air lines are still there. The stock forks do require air pressure (I don't recall the PSI off the top of my head) to operate properly. Progressive makes replacement springs that don't require air for most riding applications.
Good luck, and enjoy the ride!

Re: Hi! 82 GL1100A
Thanks Track. I just took the forks off this morning. It looks like a PO sealed up the front forks. Maybe the conversion was already done? I have a pair of softail fork springs laying around here somewhere that may work? This is my first Goldwing, so its all new to me. I'm being careful as I go and reading up before tearing into something. Hope the front rotors are still good, (replacements are $$!) Maybe just need cleaned up. Rear is the same shape, needs some attention.

Re: Hi! 82 GL1100A
The rotors don't look too bad. There are service limit specs in the factory service manual. IIRC, the discs can be ground, not turned. As far as the forks go, if you remove the caps you'll probably find original springs. Stock springs are two piece, a shorter and longer one. A set of progressives run about $90 U.S. There are also seals, dust wipers, bushings, and crush washers, if you plan on rebuilding them. FYI, I just made a list for my '81, all OEM, seals, bushings, o-rings, circlips, and crush washers, $109.00 through Partzilla.

Re: Hi! 82 GL1100A
Yep. I havent even gotten a battery for it yet. Just trying to clean it up and find potential problems. Ive been stripping it and cleaning it up on the weekends. Found some rust on the frame behind the swing arm. Planning to take that off today. Working towards remiving the motor to check the belts and internals. Did have a small coolant leak on the left head, but it seems to have quit. Marking all of the wires on the harness as I got as well. Anyone in the Pensacola or Ft Walton area care to take a look at it and give a rookie some pointers?

As it is today. I am in the process of doing paint and a dual Weber IDF 40 carb conversion at this time.

Killer! Im taking mine pretty slow. Not sure if I want to keep the original carbs, do the weber set up or the single two barrel. How did you do your seat Boxer? I have the original Travelcade seat, and really do not want to chop it up, it cleaned up really nice. Im sure someone out there could put it to better use.

Re: Hi! 82 GL1100A
I did a write up on the seat in the Goldwing Tech Forum titled Modified Ducati Monster Seat if you search there. I would Link it here but unfortunately I don’t know how to, That seat really did clean up nice. Oh and by the way Welcome!!!JustPete wrote:Killer! Im taking mine pretty slow.
