GL1000- head gasket swap/ block facing

HI all- maxwell's silver hammer tapped off the head. is still considered good practice to color the block (gasket is off stayed with head) and run a mill file and take out high spots? also who carries the o ring for the small oil plug that pulls out..thxs kenai

I believe the 0-rings at the oil port are still available from OEM

Make a rope out of twisted toilet tissue (every workbench should have a toilet paper holder on the wall above it) and push it into the water jacket openings in the head and block to keep debris out, then use your tools of choice to remove the bulk of the old gasket and finish by shaving the last bits off with a single edge razor blade, being careful not to gouge the surfaces.

Once the gasket is completely removed you can use a sharpening stone that is good and flat (= has never been used to sharpen a blade) and has never been oiled to clean & flatten the mating surfaces. Dip the stone into clean water and rub it on the surface you are preparing in a circular motion, covering as large an area as possible and moving around over the entire surface, periodically stopping to wipe the dirty water off and dip the stone in the water to clean it until the surface is uniformly clean and smooth. Once that is done wash the surfaces with a clean, wet rag and then with another clean rag with lacquer thinner to remove any oil residue and don't touch the mating surfaces with your fingers before putting it back together.

BTW: Using a stone to remove the last traces of gasket material and prepare mating surfaces is covered in the Honda Common Service Manual and can be used on all mating surfaces in the engine.
