Low side the wire wheel on the bench grinder worked a treat. Thank you.

While i was there i gave the runner a quick brush and light polish. I think i may do this to the runners instead of vapour blasting them.

Ps: what is everyone using for polishing? I would like a finish thats not too shiny.

I also stripped down the spoke wheels a few days ago. The spokes were pretty rusty. If you zoom into the pics you can see.

Needed some heat to break loose a few of the nipples. Then i threw the spokes in a container of evaporust. The evaporust did its job of removing the rust. But the spokes looked blackish and dull afterwards. You can also see the layer of rusty scum that drifted on top of the evaporust left behind on the spokes.

Decided to experiment with the wire wheel, and sure enough, it worked very well. Even on the threads and the nipples. Couple of hours later my spokes look like almost new.

Lastly i got all the parts sent off to the vapour blaster.

I use sequential grades of silicon carbide paper under a lightly running water tap. And lots of elbow grease. For more polish, rouge and the buffing wheel in my drill press. Hope the spokes have not thinned too much. It is a heavy bike.

Interesting project. I am along for the ride.

Thanks will try some out and see.

Ps: i dont think any metal was removed from the spokes. The brush was gentle enough to even clean the threads and the nipples still screw on fine.

Dont have a digital vernier but the regular one says the spoke diameters measure 4mm and 3mm after the step.

I find that a wire wheel will leave a "brushed" look without being too glossy.

I have nothing to compare them to but they look perfect to me for what I’m doing with the bike. There is minor pitting on the spokes from the rust it had before, but nothing you’re gonna see from 2ft+ away.

I could go after it with some autosol metal polish for a high shine but probably wont. The way i look at it i saves about $150+ towards other electronics needsd for the efi.

Back to the waterpump saga. It just seems like the pump is still too good to throw away right now. So i picked up a “cheap” bearing at the local bearing shop, and donated its dust seal to the ntn bearing in the water pump. I added a small amount of grease. The seal went in easily and the pump spins firmly but with no sideways play. So going to give it a go.

Also spent some more time behind the bench grinder and wire wheel. These intake tubes have close to a stainless finish so far. I like it!

Next up, getting the frame and other bits to the powdercoaters. Need to go purchase some needle nose pliers to get the driveshaft removed from the swingarm...

Needle nose for the driveshaft? You need straight external circlip pliers to remove the circlip from the slip joint end. Then it should slide right out. There is a grease seal in the end surrounding the slip joint. Use care with it as they are unobtainium.

Thanks yes i meant circlip not needle nose. Its kinda late here ;)

Pidjones do you mean no 15 in this schematic?

Mine was missing when i got in there....

Just copious amounts of grease everywhere.

On a related note:

How can i protect the swingarm bearings while it goes in for sandblasting and powdercoating?

Or should i just leave the old ones in to take the beating (while protecting swingarm) and replace them anyways?
