I don't know how i missed that at first place. But according to this http://wingovations.com/gl1000-front-fo ... 4585000543 there's not much to do. Got to find new one... Only thing i didn't understand is that do I need to find new lower part also? Is it repariable?

You won't be able to tell if the sliders are OK until the shocks are disassembled. I don't know if the '77 has bushings in the sliders, I know my '81 does. You can always troll ebay and hope for a good set, I found good shocks for my '81. I used http://franksforks.com/ on my CB450. They are very high quality and seem to be made of better material than Auntie Honda's.Wingersparty wrote:I don't know how i missed that at first place. Re: GL1000 77
Here's something to think about. I have 99' cbr900 front fork. I might as well use them. The tubes are the same lenght as gl1000. The triple trees can be modified to fit. Only thing is to find wheel hub to fit the axel. Any ideas?
Wgat would be the downsides of this swap?

Re: GL1000 77
Its been a while. The project has been hilbernating because at some point i realized i need a parts bike. Otherwise its so darn time consuming and frustrating to order every little part i find that needs repais etc.
But now i can see the light in the end of a tunnel because one 76' gl1000 without engine came up locally and the owner is more than clad to sell it. Will see how this goes.
But i have another question to GL gurus here. If id like to rebuild my engine completly but i havent done it never before how complicated is it? Should i throw away the idea rightaway or not. I have the place and i have the tools and i think i have the resouces. Is it doable using manuals, youtube, forum advice?
Why? Just because its my hobby and i would like to get that experience and knowlege. And besides that theres no reliable mechanic i know in my area that i know who is GL expert and willing to do that job...

Re: GL1000 77
Those 99 forks from a CBR900 should install by using a triple tree from an 1100 or 1200. I believe they are 41mm tubes so the 1200 triple tree will bolt right up to your 76. You will need to modify the stops. You will likely need to space the wheel and calipers to fit whatever you choose. The stock 77 forks are flimsy even with a fork brace.

Re: GL1000 77
My suggestion is to get it on the road fast after the frame repair and consider brake upgrades later. Just updating the front master cylinder, removing the splitter and using SS front brakes hoses and it wakes up the brakes well. But so much better to do this on a running bike. Else it just delays (history's says eliminates) the first ride. So much better to modify a runner.

Re: GL1000 77
The gl1100 is my main ride and the GL1000 is as a side project at the moment. I m not so worried about getting the 1000 on to the road soon. Im dealig with 1000 when i do not have parts or tools to deal with 1100.
Today while being in a garage i thought about the plans i have with her. I have a secret plan that one day if im finished with her, i will to a trip around the Europe. This motivates me to dig deep into details because i do not want the mechanical parts to fail. So if this all will take a more than 2-3 winters im fine with that
Today i cleaned the rear hub and discovered that the driven flange is worn out. So i need to find a new one. do they even sell those?

Re: GL1000 77
Yesterday i brought home my second GL1000. Its without an engine but it has the rest of the parts i need- forks, speedometer, brakes, origimal muffler, radiator, wheels are in much better condition.
Motivation is high to continiue with the project now.
Fun fact is that there are only two GL1000 officially registered in my country and now i own them both. This gives you the idea how hard is to find parts here for the GL1000
Parts bike:
The Vetter, seat and luggage racks n cases i will sell or trade if anybody is interested
And my happy place at the moment.
The GL 1100 is waiting for belts and carbs rebuild kit and then it will roll out to another garage to wait for the spring.

Re: GL1000 77
Looks like projects to keep you busy and have a lot of fun! Make sure you lubricate the flange splines with very high moly content lubricant, and while things are apart, do the same to the slip joint splined coupling just in front of the rear hub. There should be a grease fitting on topm but pulling it apart, cleaning, and careful lubrication is better when this far.

Re: GL1000 77
Aren't parts bikes wonderful? Looks like you may just have what you need to get a running 1000 fully capable of touring Europe. I certainly sympathize with the parts availability issue you face. (That's why having the only two 1000's in Estonia is important!)
Good luck - and please keep us posted. I don't know why, but I have missed your thread up until now.

Re: GL1000 77
This was my final task this year, swingarm cleaned , primed and painted. Thats it for 2019. Lots of work to be done in 2020- target is rolling bike (without an engine) before next winter. And the engine will be the last in winter. Will see.
