Fuel Gauge

....sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...mostly doesn't.

Which end should I check as there a low voltage going into the sensor at the tank...not sure what that means tho?

Make sure your float connections are clean and tight first. Then report back and we can go from there.

If it helps there's no response at the dial when I remove the float etc from the tank and manually move it up and down slowly.

The fuel gauge uses 7 volts, and is wired through its own regulator. You can (very carefully) remove the metal cover and clean up the contacts where the float lever slides along the wire coil. Some people have had success with that. I say 'carefully' because there's a fine wire connection inside that you don't want to damage...

I see. I gather the regulator isn't separate from the unit and replaceable?

The 7v regulator is not part of the sending unit assembly. It is mounted underneath the LH panel.
Suggest you look at the shop manual.

Actually on the 1100's the 7v regulator is tucked under the instrument cluster...

Replacement 7 volt rgulators are available from the goldwingdocs site.

Cleaned sensor with no damage to small wire. No change. Temp gauge works, down the fuel gauge have its own regulator?

The temp gauge and fuel gauge use the same regulator, so if one or the other is working properly, it probably isn't the regulator.

Connect an ohmeter to the two contacts on the float assembly and then manually operate the float. The reading on the meter should go up and down. That at least checks that part. I soaked my float sender in white vinegar, after very carefully bending the small tabs on the cover to remove it. Worked very well.

All fixed. Just rewired. Must have been a break in one of the wires.
