CDI? I didn't know anyone made Capacitor Discharge Ignitions for GoldWings. In any case, your 1100's original Transistor Amplifier Ignition (TI or TAI) sould probably be far superior to most CDIs.

Yeah, there are a lot of people selling stuff on eBay that haven't a clue what they actually have. These are usually the same type of seller that lists used rad hoses and timing belts...

That's appears to be listed as a Silverwing (GL650) part.

Apparently they are. I've sent DSS an email about that. Calling a TI Spark unit a CDI is like calling a carrot a turnip: They are both edible roots but they are definitely not the same thing.

There is a huge difference in the way a CDI and a TI work. A CDI stores charge in a capacitor and then discharges the capacitor through the ignition coil's primary winding to produce the spark pulse. In a TI system the Spark Unit uses a uses a transistor amplifier to open and close the circuit between the coil and ground (similar to what the points do in a Kettering ignition).

In the CX/GL500/650 world the difference is very pronounced. The CDI used in CX500 models is powered and triggered by extra windings on the alternator stator with absolutely no connection to the bike's 12V system while the TI used in GL500, '81 and later CX500s and all CX/GL650 models works the same way as the system that the GL1100 has (yes, they use the exact same SU as the GL1100). Even the ignition coils are different and if you use a CDI coil on a TI bike or vise versa you will likely do harm to either the coil or the electronics.

So they told me they called them what the Honda manual did and I informed them that neither the GL1100 FSM or the CX/GL500 FSM mentioned "CDI". I haven't heard back from them.

I don't have any confidence in DSS since the CX500 camchain guide fiasco anyway.

Just presumed this forum works the same as others. Maybe not.

Pity as they're well respected from what I recall in my ST1100 days.

I bought a "oem style" replacement rear signal light for my 1100 from them. Looked the same but the stem wasn't even close to OEM style.
