I forgot to introduce my self. I just bought a 1977 GL1000,(my first Honda). It's claimed to have just 7500 miles on it (maybe, maybe not). I haven't fallen in love with it yet (like you guys) but it looks pretty good, runs alright and I got it for a pretty good price. I got it last Monday so I haven't put a plate on it yet and I've only done the test ride. Next week I'll get it legal and start to knock the warts off of it and I'll let you know how it goes.

welcome back. lol
I tried the vinegar route on my 76 and it didn't work very well so I did the electrolysis method which worked very well.
It is on the back burner for now so I drained the tank completely and left the cap off so it won't rust again.
my one suggestion for the carbs is..if you don't have a vacuum tester I would invest in one. I did when I did the carbs on my 76 and discovered a very small crack in one of the hoses that would have taken me forever to find had I not tested them as per Randakk's video.

You mentioned a desire for touring. If your '78 is not so equiped, you will probably want to add fairing, saddlebags, trunk, etc. Let me advise you to not put much money into it. There are many people that prefer a "naked" bike, and strip off the add-ons. There is not much market for those parts (certainly not here in East Tennessee). They often go to dumpsters. Also, any stock parts that you remove should be saved in dry storage as they are becoming rare. I'd love to find a rear grab-bar for less than $50!
