Hello from Oak Island NC

#1

Post by Chainman »

Hello All,
My name is Shain and I live on Oak Island NC. I'm a contractor and pretty handy with tools but never did any mechanical work; just woodworking. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to purchase a 2006 gz250 for cheap and my love for riding was rekindled. I refer to her as my second first bike. I had a cb450 back in high school. The gz is a great learner but I didn't realized how small it is until the Hawk came around. A 1980 cb400t I found on craigslist for $75. I bought it just to take it apart and get a $75 education in motorcycle mechanics but a few months later I am riding my new daily driver. The Hawk runs great but it ain't much to look at or make long rides on. This brings me to my latest purchase, a 1975 gl1000. This bike, I've named her Donna, sat in the sellers basement for 32 years. The seller parked it after having trouble with the starter intending to fix it later, which never came. He also said it "needed a clutch" so there's that. The only other thing he told me was it has electronic ignition, an improvement he had installed so not fully stock.

I have quickly perused the forum and am grateful for it's existence and to all who share here. I know this will be a great source of information for me as I prepare Donna for the open road.

Anyways, I've attached some photos.

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Looks like it was a sunny basement .... lots of good info in shoptalk .... timing belts should creep up your list after sitting that long ....

Welcome. We have vacationed on OINC many times (At Last property - beachfront near the cabana). There are good clutch adjustment procedures in the Honda service manual - not very hard and only requires a 10mm, 12mm and flat blade screwdriver. Often we find folks have used automotive "fuel saving" oil which contains additives that cause the wet clutch to slip. Changing to a non-fuel saving oil such as 4 stroke MC oil or (what I and many use) a diesel oil like Rotella will allow the clutch to improve. Try to keep her away from the salt air! We might make it there again next summer, never can tell. Will miss the Flying Pig - cool place, too bad it closed.

Welcome from Wisconsin. My '76 has a similar patina from sitting for years in a sunny machine shed. I kinda like it! Anyway, as mentioned above, timing belts should be a first priority, and clutch issues are relatively rare on these bikes, so do some digging before jumping in to a clutch replacement (FYI, a clutch replacement typically requires removal of the engine...). There's lots of good info in ShopTalk, including a new 2 you thread that's linked in my signature... Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the welcome.
Well, now that I've thought about it, I don't know for sure where the bike was stored over the years. The seller said it was parked since 1987 and we did roll it out of his basement when I bought it. I put the two together; he never said it had been in his basement all that time. The sun damage does suggest otherwise.

I've already started with this method of starting a GL after a long lay-up:

I feel compelled to say again how great this forum is; so much knowledge available.

Sun damaged, but not the salt spray corrosion that I would expect from outdoors on OINC, so probably inland. Maybe even behind a window. The seat looks fine and they usually go brittle from direct UV.

Raleigh, actually.
The seat has a small tear but the bike came with a spare seat in excellent condition, the tool kit and a factory service manual. Sadly, no kick starter though.
Oh, and a groovy sissy bar, but I had to pull it of to get it into the van.

Well, welcome from Raleigh. The wife and I just road down to Wilmington yesterday to have lunch at The George on the Wilmington riverfront. We've ridden to OI a couple of times but not in a long while. Enjoy your project.
