Lucien I have taken the measurements of the 2001 sportster slip-ons. The inlet is 1and3/4" or 45mm,
The outside diam of the muffler is 3" or 76.5mm (they are pretty much that dia other than the taper at the outlet and inlet) The mufflers are a total of 19 and 1/8" in length.
Included a pic of the muffler and one of the way they attach. They also have some Harley gobbledy
goop stamped into the exterior surface that mounts to the inside. That will not be seen when I mount the two I have but don't know what would happen if you had to turn them to mount more than one per side if you get my drift.

A 3 inch external diameter was actually better than I was expecting. Of course, figuring out things like fitment and ground clearance is a heck of a lot harder without a bike to physically look at, but I think that size muffler may be workable. A triangular cluster of 3 per side would only be 6-7 inches tall (depending on a gap between them, if any), and about that wide, if not slightly less.

The muffler that I will be mounting on the right side ie. with the print info to the inside is stamped
part 65613-97 the one that goes on the left side of my bike is stamped part 65605-97

Been doing some more Photoshop on the exhaust, and I've hit another (metaphorical) snag.
I love the sound of the Harley pipes on a boxer engine. I've checked alternatives, but nothing else gives a nice throaty rumble for the same price. However, if I run them far enough back to clear the bags, it looks.... strange. Not to mention the mounting bracket would have to be SUPER cantilevered.
I like the look of them farther forward (and would help with mounting), but I would then need to find a way to mount some extended tips to clear the bags. I'm not thinking it's overly difficult, but the mufflers themselves rule out the use of simple slip-ons.
But who knows. It's all theoretical at this point.

I might suggest (a) move the bags forward, and (b) stagger the muffs (top farther back, bottom farther forward)...

I've always wanted to mount a pair of HD mufflers side by side under each of Mr.H's saddlebags. How about putting the first 2 like that and the 3rd below?
BTW: I had the HD mufflers on Mr.H connected directly to the headers (with an adapter) and they ended about halfway under the bags. Other than having to clean a film of soot from the bottoms of the bags any time I had the bags off and noticed it (you might need to clean light coloured bags more often) it didn't cause any problems.

The idea is to basically mimic the triangular arrangement of (say) a set of Cobra pipes- a vertical stack of two inboard, and the third centered between them, but farther out. I like the look, it may help with ground clearance (much as I like a vertical stack of three pipes...), and the headers are already arranged that way right before they enter the stock muffler. Staggering the pipes front-to-back is probably a good idea, but stylistically it's not a look I tend to like.
Popping an unobtrusive heat shield under the bags is a possibility too. But who knows.
