Help with keys
Went to pull my keys out of the ignition.
But old shakey butter fingers dropped them down in the gap between the triple tree and the shelter front. Looked and looked w flash light no joy.
The Mrs said flip the bike over.
Problem: shelter key and ignition key is on the same ring.
The frame and ignition and shelter is original.
So if I have a valid vin is this doable?
Last .resort...lock smith?
I'm such a foolish dude!

Re: Help with keys
Remove the seat and the rear shelter small back cover ( 2 screws) and use a screwdriver to pop the shelter latch. Not having a spare set of keys is a bad situation to put yourself in, so maybe get one cut once you retrieve them.

Re: Help with keys
No problem removing my gun fighter seat.
The JIS screws are stuck too tight for my jis screwdriver.
Will try my impact driver in the morning.
There's always something.
I don't think I ever took that part off. I never torq the crap out everything.
I know better. But as they tell me here often I'm ham fisted.
Will get some penetrating oil on it for a day or two.
Thought about heat but too close to the tank.
Thanks again fellas.

Re: Help with keys
I bought JIS #2 and #3 - 1/4" drive hex bits (by Motion Pro) from Amazon. I use the #2 in a standard screwdriver handle hex bit diver, and the #3 in a 3/8 tee handle with 1/4 hex adapter. You can get a lot of torque on the tee handle.77Gowing wrote:No problem removing my gun fighter seat.

Re: Help with keys
Yes I even found that I commented way back then.
Sorry to say but I've got no joy. Bought an impact screw driver cobbled up a PZ screw driver and proceeded to impact away. No joy. The driver instructions are not very descriptive so had to try it both ways. Duhhhhhh?
I deserve this you know. I hope da boss is getting a good laugh out of it.
Tomorrow after my post OP I'll pick up a map gas gun and carefully apply some heat. Barring that it's time to get out my drill.
They are really stuck. And I've never had any joy from a manual impact driver.
It just could be that I'm just flat out matched....like that would be hard. Lol
But...........I never give up. Maybe I'll die trying but I have to try anyway.
Now for some good old Irish libation. Triple distilled.

are you twisting the handle of the impact driver in the direction you want the screw to go after you insert the tip in the screw and before you wack it with a hammer?

Re: Help with keys
Yesterday I finally got the two cover screws out and tried my luck at opening my shelter via WF's method. I was too excited and tried just a few times no luck.
So I decided to come back later and try again. It took me 10-15 minutes of fishing around plus a couple of retreads of WF's and I got her done in a non hamfisted way.
No joy though keys are somewhere in the abis. This really should be a Carney game.
Can I extract the airbox without pulling the shelter frame?
Btw guys n gals I'm smitten with wrenching and riding my wing.
Don't think there's a cure either even though I'm a clumsy wrencher.

Re: Help with keys
Do you have a service manual downloaded? The air box is an easy removal with a little fiddling with the larger box part which has a drain hose attached for the PVC system that need to be disconected.
The shelter can come off too if needed, unless they have actuall dropped down into the motor area and not the shelter, you should be able to locate them.

Re: Help with keys
Kenny the airbox will come off by removing the wingnut at the top, taking out the filter and then you can see the screws that hold the airbox to the plenum chamber.
Your keys are probably somewhere near the coils or on the shelfy thing which is part of the front heat shield.

Yes I had already extracted the box cover and filter. Just hope I don't have to do any jiggerypoakery like take the shelter support off. I'm shy but have complete faith I can do this since I did just start out with just a bunch of parts when I began this journey 5 yes ago. Besides I've had the shelter support on & off several times.
Just lazy I guess.
Thanks I'll pull the box off later this morning. The shelfy thingies I think is like a fire wall.
All the best my friend.
