Josh did his tax returns the other day and figures he'll get about a $1200 refund. Although he officially owes me close to double that in back rent and other expenses (he's not working again), the prospect of having enough cash to buy everything needed to get the bike on the road has given him some fire to make some progress. I guess I'd rather have this bike out of the workspace, although I've made it clear that I'm not forgiving his debt...
Anyway, today he learned how to use a valve spring compressor, as well as properly install the heads and use a torque wrench. The valve covers that came on the engine were junk, warped, with chrome flaking off, etc. so he asked if he could have the spare set of 1000's covers.
The second pic is the mess of o-rings that came with the full upper gasket set. I say 'mess' because not only is there no guide to what's included, four of the o-rings needed to install the transmission cover aren't the right size (everything for the heads seemed to be fine). Oh well, what's another $18.00 (almost half of that is shipping and tax :( )

Yes those o rings you get in a bag with gasket sets are a pain. You have to try figure out what is what and some are the wrong size. I found same as you with front cover o rings not being right. In the Honda workshop manual for the GL1000 there is a list of every o ring used on the bike and their sizes. Very helpful in trying to figure out what io ring is what.

I admire you being a good dad to Josh.

This project is frustrating at times! Josh got his tax refund and ordered a slew of parts, but not one brake component. 'Special' engine paint @ $35, but no brake pads? (I won't tell what he spent that money on. Grrrr!)

The engine is all together except for the timing belts and setting the valves. Yesterday Josh mounted his new tires. Interestingly, he said "I just wasted a whole day mounting these stupid tires!"
My response? "That's called 'progress.' You're two tires farther along than you were before..."

Josh has been slowly chipping away at bits and pieces of this project. The chrome aftermarket rocker covers that came on the bike were peeling and warped, and he decided he liked the 1000 covers better. He was going to go with all black, but I showed him a few pics with the brushed highlights... I'm actually pretty impressed! The engine is hanging in the driveway, in primer. It'll be matte black as well.

Valve and belt covers looking good. The matte black engine block with a few aluminum highlights should really stand out.

Josh made some great progress the past few days! Starting to look like a motorcycle again. He's starting to take more time and take pride in his work rather than just having that 'gitrdun' attitude. Which is the whole idea, right? lolol lolol lolol

It's been a while since I've updated this thread, mostly because I'm skipping a whole lot of 'drama.' I'll just say Josh got another hard life lesson...

Tonight, I helped him temporarily hook up the remainder of the wiring harness, a remote fuel tank, and give it a go. He thought I was crazy, and that it would never run (self-doubt is one of his biggest problems), but...

Here's Josh, contemplating his next move... (He commandeered a friend's garage for a few weeks.)
I helped him adjust the carbs some, only to discover the bike was missing badly, mostly because of poor spark. He trimmed back the wires, which cured that part of it, but still no combustion on #1 cylinder. We have fuel to the bowl, but pilot screw adjustment makes no difference. Next step is a compression test, then most likely pulling the carbs for a look-see.
We also tested the stator so that he can fix up that connection, and did some trouble shooting on the radiator fan. Looks like the motor itself isn't working, so we couldn't tell if the thermal switch is good or not. I might retest the motor before he pulls the radiator to swap it. I'm not too sure about the quality of my connections while jumping it to the battery.
Still, all-in-all, a good amount of progress!

Here's a pic Josh sent me of his bike as it sat three weeks ago. Compression test came out good, so he pulled the carbs and found the idle jets in need of attention, as well as some sticky slides. Unfortunately for him, he was in a 'I'm not going to listen' mood and had to remove and install the carbs three times before he figured out that one should check everything on all four carbs while you have them off...

He commandeered all the 'plastics' from the first Goldwing I ever owned, which had been in storage for years, and started installing them. He also fashioned a primitive straight pipe exhaust (read LOUD) and got that hooked up.

Then he went into a funk... again...

As I'm sure I mentioned before, Josh didn't want to spend the money on kits to rebuild the brakes. They were the last thing he needed to do to get the bike on the road, and he kept putting it off. Then he 'lost' his garage space. Listening to him P and M for the last two weeks was driving me nuts...

Last Friday, October 2nd, he asked me if he might be able to borrow 'Layla' for some 'bike therapy.' I told him no. Then I told him the 'Slimey Crud Run' was Sunday, and it was going to be great riding weather. I'm such a meanie! lolol lolol lolol
