Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Alright confirmed... running on just the right bank.... cannot for the life of me think of what would cause the left side not to run.
Have checked compression and it’s good
Have checked spark, and switched which wire goes where Incase I’m stupid.
It is/was getting fuel don’t know why it wouldn’t now...
Swapped plugs no difference
Not sure where to look at this point if I’m honest.

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
If it's one bank, that pretty much rules out ignition (as well as the tests you've done). From here, I'd probably check for fuel starvation by opening the bowl drain screws on the offending side and compare the amounts with the running side. Should be close to the same. It can be a bit messy...

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Good news I found cylinder 4, and by found I mean I rode it and it came alive seems. I’ve heard some coughing from cylinder 2 no steady running though. I’m thinking it’s got to be carb related at this point so I’m going to pull them.
I will say I am thoroughly impressed with just how well these bikes run on both 2 and 3 cylinders. If I hadn’t checked exhaust temps randomly I would have never known.

It will run even better hitting on all four! Sounds like you've got some fuel supply issues that have started to clear up...

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Carbs are back off I couldn't for the life of me get them out without taking the shell off. Fat hands maybe, going to clean up the engine while they're off again. want to repaint the fuel pump as it has alot of peeled paint and maybe a few other spots as well.
Although i could probably take this bike apart blind folded now, i'm pretty over it. I'm ready to ride it! got new shinko's front and rear new turn signals for the front since my originals were disgusting, they may clean up though. Started cleaning the exhaust. I think I'll do a more complete tear down and clean next winter where I can fix the clear coat (maybe) take the speedo and tach apart (both act funny)

Shell? I guess you mean shelter, which comes off very easy and YES it is a lot easier with the shelter sides off. Once you have had the carbs on-and-off a half dozen or so times, you get good at it. Unhooking and re-hooking the throttle and choke cables is helped with a pair of hemostats. Heating the intake runner boots with a heat gun helps in rotating them without damage. Vacuum grease helps, too and helps keep the o-rings in place.

let us know how they sink up once you have some miles on her and know the carbs are solid.

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Quick update, road 30 miles on Sunday to put some time on everything, was 40 degrees out so a bit brutal but I was eager. Ran great didn’t run into any problems.
This week I got new Shinko’s mounted. Going to spend the next week trying to get all the major things that have been bothering me cleaned up.
Didn’t realize the headlight brackets weren’t suppose to be painted so I stripped them and it look like whoever painted them scuffed the chrome with sand paper so I’m going to bead blast them and paint them black again till I feel like finding chrome ones.
I may look into repainting the front emblem, not shown in the picture, it’s pretty rough. Not sure if I can find a gold paint that will be good enough to do it though

Great News, you are getting very close to finish with great weather timing. At this point, much is not important so do be ready to ride on the good days and wait for foul weather for the "nice to do" stuff.

For the emblem, crafters use a gold leaf that rubs on from a backing. It could be cleared over, I believe. Maybe talk to a Hobby Lobby when this is over.

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
Thanks, I could have this bike back together pretty quick if needed won't be getting to that level of detail in cleaning. I agree with the gold leafing I'm tempted to try one of the gold leafing pens, I have some other emblems i can test on before doing the real thing. I recently made my own emblems for my Kawasaki so i'm fairly confident I can do a decent job. Worse case i'll model it up and mill some from aluminum ha. (excuse the holes not being counter sunk)

Re: $200 1979 GL1000 barn find
So I've been riding regularly, even my wife asked to ride on the wing yesterday to my surprise. But for the first time the starter motor spun and didn't crank the engine. I suspect the starter clutch seems like the obvious choice. I was able to turn the motor by hand using the generator access point and then it was able to crank over so we could ride.
Has anyone replaced these, looks fairly simple from Randakks youtube video with the exception of pulling the motor. I probably wont do it right away unless it begins to happen more consistently, until then i'll carry the wrenches to turn the motor over by hand worse comes to worse....
KZ1000 is back on the lift so the wing will just be ridden for a while

A lot of these old wings have an intermittent spin of the starter clutch. usually it will engage after a few tries it will work
