3rd GL1100 project. I'm getting faster.. (1983 this time)
This is a 1983 Honda Goldwing GL1100.
May have been an interstate at some point.
I picked it up for cheap and was able to ride it 120 miles home from CT to NY.
Has 77000 on the odometer and no speedometer cable. (so we know its MORE)
Fan switch wasn't working, one of the Previous Owner (PO) hard wired a fan Toggle switch.
Was missing a foot peg (had a long bolt)
Aftermarket pipes, 30+ years of crud on her, mouse nest in the air filter, PULL throttle cable half way broken (didn't know)
I think that should be enough of the bad.
STILL was able to ride it home 120 miles!!
I bought this bike because the engine was solid. When I arrived at the guys house, the bike started right up cold with little to no smoke and little to no choke. I let it warm up and no oil leak was obvious. Sounded great and steady. Felt great on the ride home. Plenty of power all the way through the gears and the RPM range. Turns out the frame and suspension was rock solid too! SO I'm really Happy with the purchase.
Plan: Tear it down and take everything off my '80 GL1100 and put it on this frame and engine and try and sell it for like $3000-4000.
I remembered a friend who will not be named, was interested in my '80 last year and I told him I'm not comfortable selling it because there's a problem with the engine. Well, I gave him a call and he is So Excited! He already gave me a down payment. Wants me to build the bike for his Dad for Fathers Day! I've already done work for his Dad in the past. Great guy. I'm super excited. We came to a great deal. It's less than what I was looking for but I don't mind. I really enjoy doing this!
I started tearing it down last week. Posted some of the parts in the For Sale forum. Today I had a full day to strip it all the way down and give it a FULL CLEAN.. Power Wash, windex the frame, polish the forks and all the chrome, started painting some of the smaller pieces. You can actually SEE the ribs on the bottom of the engine now!
My old broken down '80 is in the background of some of these pics. I'll post more as I go. I got a LOT done today.
So without further interruption!

I haven’t done much this week. More cleaning. Touch up paint on the frame. Painted a bunch of brackets, bar clamps and misc parts. Installed the new throttle cable. Installed a new fan temp switch, fuel lines, fuel filter... stuff.

Re: 3rd GL1100 project. I'm getting faster.. (1983 this time)
Made more progress today.
Finished all cleaning (that’s a lie. You are never done cleaning during a rebuild)
I used a full can of Gunk foam and I’ve been having great luck with a kitchen degreased spray my wife gave me with a multipurpose drill brush!!!
Gets in all the little corners!
So that was this morning outside on the pavers where we store the garbage.
Also cleaned the wire harness!! Looks brand new.
Installed the freshly painted firewall, radiator, new coolant hoses, new oil filter, brake pedal, most of the hand controls (everything but the hand brakes), installed the dyna coils, overflow tank, rectifier, blinker relay, solenoid, battery cage, air box and air filter, digital speedometer... I think that’s it.. prob spent about 6-8 hours total.
I had to drill some custom holes in the bars to get the controls where I wanted them.
Also an extra hole was required for mounting the dyna coils properly.
Lost 2 bolts to the impact drill gods. Always be careful with the old Honda 10mm bolts. I’m just going too fast to care! :p
Here are some pics.
