2 piece needle. Main needle separated from the “keeper” disc. Apparently, they are pressed together, but didn’t stay that way.

Three different problems:
1) crap in the tank initially shut me down.
2) ignition timing was retarded (seems like I remember the coil pickup plate screwsbeing a smidge loose)
3) somewhere along these struggles, 2 main jet needles “dropped”

I can’t make it out, but the pic looks as though these were OEM needles.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
77 WING, 1200 engine with 77 heads, cams, gl1100 foot pegs, Magna V65 front end, 764A carbs, [-gone Suzuki M109 monoshock--, replaced with gl1100 shocks] gl 1200 swing arm, gl1500 final drive, wheel and rear brakes Valkyrie seat, Meanstreak tank, Sportster pipes, Power Arc ignition off crank.

At least one other member had the same issue with the needles separating just like that. Definitely an odd occurrence!

Yeah, I've been in lots of these carbs and have not seen that. Seen some other odd things though. lolol

Might work. You would have to make sure there was no solder under the "hat". That would make the needle set up a bit higher and would affect the jetting. Also would have to really make sure the "hat" was down all the way where it is in stock form. For the same reason.

I soldered them back together and then carefully filed away in that interference area you mention. Working great so far.
