Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
I got the $100 painted parts put on yesterday. Waiting on some headlight brackets I ordered and need to decided on a seat but it’s coming together.
Filled the cooling system and ran it through a couple of heat cycles during the day checking for leaks.
I think I’m going to like the Holley carb. Instant start and smooth idle. Can’t wait to see how it runs down the road.
Also need to figure what to replace the godawful huge stock tail light with.

I’ll using the wiring harness from the ‘80 so I will be avoiding those problems. Thanks for the info on the igniters. I’ll keep them for spares.Track T 2411 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 11:09 pm Just an FYI, there are a few differences between the '81 and '83. The 81 has the neutral switch on the right side of the engine, and the 83 has a more complicated switch behind the transmission cover. The 83 also has self- cancelling directionals, so the wiring harness is different. The 83 came stock with improved spark ignitors as well. They are a plug and play swap.

You did very well buying those parts for 100 bucks. They look very nice and were they mine you would of had to 'pry them out of my dead fingers' or give me three or four times that price to get them. Paint is becoming very costly these days.

Yes I feel very lucky to have gotten them for that price. Guy I bought them from only does original restorations and they came with a project bike he acquired recently. He had another set with factory paint ready to go on the bike

Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
I took an 83 exhaust system, cut off the rusted out extensions, ran a wire wheel over the chrome to rough it up them painted it with VHT header paint. Left the heat shields on and masked them before painting. Sound great without the baffles in the end.

I didn’t like the hugeass tail light and wide turn signals so I built a bracket to mount some lights I had lying around.

Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
I have everything I need for this project except a seat. I couldn’t stand it any longer so I scabbed on a ‘75 seat so I could take it for a ride. After putting around long enough to get the temp up to the operating range I discovered that I couldn’t open the Holley 5200 2 barrel carb up all at once with out it stumbling. However if I just rolled into it, it would run like a bat out of hell! Takes a little throttle finesse but I am very pleased with the way it ran.

Gorgeous blue, and a score on the bits.
I notice the sport bars. Did you do anything to shorten cables - or do you intend to do anything with them? (I might see shorter throttle cables??)
My son and I put sport bars on our '83 project around the midpoint of the rebuild. We managed to reroute stock cables for the most part. I think we managed to snake the clutch cable between the speedo and tach, which worked ok and looked clean enough. But it all felt a little tight and twisty there behind the headlight bucket.
We ended up using some vintage CB750 bars: much less rise and pullback than the tourers to promote an upright, neutral position. And we were able to more easily work the stock cables.

Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
When I started this build I had cafe racer in mind hence the sport bars. I have re-routed the stock cables and that is probably the most unsanitary part of the build. I do have some stock bars that I may try on it later.NotSoLilCrippseys wrote: ↑Wed Apr 14, 2021 9:41 pm Gorgeous blue, and a score on the bits.

Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
Ours is my first experience with a Wing, so I have nothing to offer by way of wisdom - on any of it.
I'm not sure quite how I'd describe our GL1100 NGW project. Not cafe, to be sure, though my son's first idea was that we'd buy an inexpensive bike and build a cafe racer. Maybe it's a "basic Standard with subtle gestures to the GL1000 in the saddle and perhaps bars."
We never tried riding with the sport bars we had on our build - briefly; maybe they would have been fun and comfortable. When I climbed on it in the shop, comfortable was not a word I imagined I'd use after an hour ride. I think it was less about stretching out over the tank so much as sensing I might feel pinched in the hips.
We knew we didn't want the stock tourers on our build. We sort of split the difference, and I like it a lot.
Have fun thinking about the bars that work for you.

Re: 1980/1983 Whatzitgonnabe Build
My gauges decided to start reading high while I was doing some tuning last week so I checked the voltage and it was at 10V so I ordered a 7V regulator from Murray Carbs.
I installed it today and gauges are back to normal.
There wasn’t enough room under the cover on the back of the gauges so I had to find a place to put it.
I mounted it under the shelter using the lower mounting point for the fuse panel then extended the wiring up to the gauges.
