Center stand failure.

#1

Post by elslimdiablo »

Couple weeks ago, I was puting my 75 on the center stand and it suddenly lurched away from from me and fell on its right side. Never dropped a bike before. Looked it over and didnt see anything wrong. Tonight the same thing happened. This time I fell on my wife's brand new Cherokee. NO ONE IS HAPPY! I checked it and found the weld broken on the left foot, this caused the bike to roll forward and away from me as it was almost at the top of its travel. I have a parts 76' that I can swap out, but I noticed my 77's center stand is a lot beefier. I dont think it is a direct swap as the swing shaft is also bigger than the earliers wings. Any suggestions? I could just weld this one up, but Im not sure what cause the failure.

I thought the early ones (75-77) were all the same but I guess not. I know the 78/79 is quite different. If the failure is rust related a decent shop should be able to fix it up. Fixing the mount is a bit of a challenge to get the angle just right

The first thing I did was throw it on the lift and checked the mount the first time it fell over..

It looks like it's been cracked in that circle for a while. The edge of it is rusty unlike the rest of the fracture.

Rage has kept me from even wanting me to look at it. This weekend Ill put it on the lift and get it out of there and look how bad the rust is. Maybe clean it up, weld it back together, and gusset it to strengthen the area.

If the rust is bad there, I'd check other parts of the lower frame. Not just rust, but the forces that the frame takes when putting a heavier bike than Honda had ever built before caused iterative changes in the GL1000 frames. The '79s have extra gussets from the fore-aft lower tube on each side to the center stand tube.

I had the center stand on my 76 fail the same way. I installed one from my 78 parts bike, it took the place of the faulty one perfectly. The only difference is the 78 one has a longer foot lever to clear the muffler on that model. I prefer the later stand as the foot lever is longer and the leverage improved, the bike goes up much easier.

Do you have a 16” rear tire? I also broke the stand on my 76 which has a rear 16” tire and required much more force on the lever to center it.

But it’s kinda looking like maybe there’s a problem with the early stands. On my bike I welded it up but ended up putting another on that a friend gave me (thanks Bob) but I also modified it by adding a piece of angle iron to the front of the foot so when you put it up you’re not starting on the edge. The angle iron was basically to extend the radius a bit so you start on the flat and it just rolls up.

I would strongly recommend buying a replacement one that's in known good condition. If that side is rusted, then chances are there's more degradation elsewhere that could cause issues in the future. Plus, the cost of a replacement piece is likely going to be cheaper than having a shop do all that work (unless you're a good craftsman yourself).

While the stand is off, it would be advised to give the frame attachment points a thorough inspection for issues as well, just to be safe. Oh, and you might as well install a grease port on there to keep it lubed up and operating smoothly!!

Too bad you aren't closer. I think there is a '79 stand out in the shed.

It doesn't look like a weld failure to me. Looks like rust-through or fatigue of the metal above the weld.

Center stands belong on a peg on the wall. They last forever that way.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I agree with Terry, that looks like the rust through that you get on the removable frame section where it just thins until it fails. I'd buy one from a '78 or '79 and call it a day. I'm sorry about the Jeep. I've never had one of my bikes damage my wife's ride and I hope I never do.

Thanks guys, the rest of the frame and mounting points are in good shape. For now I'm going to take it off. When I measured my 77 stand I was not fully on the stand shaft with my caliper, so I got a larger reading, making me think they were larger than the 75 &76. Again, a fair amount of rage was clouding my abilities. As for the Jeep, today I'm going to a paintless dent guy that does high end vehicles to remedy that issue. I rwally need to build a shop just for my junk!
