started with this 500.00 parts bike. Not running, but turned over freely and the owner said it ran before he sat it in the barn.

Welcome from Wisconsin. Yep, these bikes don't like sitting! I've gone through getting three back on the road. Have fun! (Oh, and change the timing belts!)

Got the new ones in the box already!!
I did get it running before I broke it down... If I have good compression, aside from timing belts, fluids, plugs etc..., is there anything else I should do while I have the motor on the bench?

Depends on how much you want to invest and how long you plan to keep it. Some would refresh the head gaskets, clutch, etc etc while it is out. Others would just do all the external rubber bits that cause leaks down the road. Any yet others would clean and paint and stab it back in.

Me personally on any bike I plan to keep I would do head gaskets (including valve stem seals), Shifter seal, Tach seal, Clean the oil strainer, timing belts, Rad hoses, ad probably a few other things I am forgetting just now

I always suggest checking the water pump, especially if the bike has been sitting for a long time. There's a pretty good write up in ShopTalk...

Thanks for the info guys... Not sure if I'll change out everything, but at least now I know what to inspect and then decide if/when to do the work...
I'm hoping to keep this bike and take some long rides. I started out thinking just a cool bobber, but decided to make it into a bike I could keep and do my long weekends on... So I'm adding forward controls, bags and a windscreen. Been without a bike for 5 years and its killing my soul LOL...
Thank you
