Early GL1000 gauge identification

#1

Post by rdway60 »

Hey folks, i'm looking at an earlier 2/75 gl1000 (GL1-1002342) and need validation as to whether they are the original gauges or not. I was under the assumption all of the 75's came with the brighter green backgrounds(my 6/75 has these)that tended to crack if too much sun/heat. This particular bike has a darker green? background and a red mark at the 70mph position. I seem to remember reading someplace before that these gauges came on the very earlier models? My main concern is this bike comes with another possibly tweeked front end that has the lighter green gauges mounted on it. Present owner doesn't know history of the bike as it was given to him by an elderly family member. Any guesses? Thanks in advance for any input.

To my knowledge, the lighter green is correct for a 1975. It's been a while, but the darker green-ish I THINK showed up in 1977.

(I've never owned a '78/'79 model, but I think those went to straight black faces, iirc.)
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

The 78 has red needles and the temp gauge is in the faux tank console. 79 got white needles and same on the temp gauge.

It looks like mystery solved by gltriker! Those pictures to me show the degradation of the gauge face by mother nature in chronological order. I would have never guessed they would change so much. So my guess is probably correct about the bike/gauge above. Original front was probably replaced at 40,000ish after a dump or worse. Thanks fellas
