I bought one of their seats for a ‘80 naked project. I was impressed with the price, fit and quality. Only downside was the time it took to get it. I think it was like 6 weeks.Pb9717 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 3:54 pmMattMcCoy wrote: ↑Fri Sep 17, 2021 2:25 pm Re: Seat
Have you taken a look at Texavina?
https://texavina.com/gl1100-gold-wing-1979-1983/
Ive seen those seats on eBay, made in Vietnam I believe, but was unsure as to the fit. Anyone have any experience with them? If it fits , then heck yea, that'll be a great solution.

Thanks for the thread. I am starting on a similar project on a 1981 GL1100 that came out of a barn and has not run in 15 years. Agree on the comments about making it reliable and safe while bringing in the modifications.
@PB9717 - interested to hear how you get on with the saddle and the fenders when you get to them. Any others tips as you go along would be good.
@MikeNTexas - great look and that blue-and-black combination really works. What exhaust is that, please ?

It’s factory exhaust with the rusted baffles cut off and painted with VHT flat black.

getting back to the tank, part of the challenge will be determining how much of the crud is varnish and how much is rust. Evaporust is great for rust, but does nothing on varnish.
You may need multiple cycles, varying between something for varnish then for rust. I went thru multiple cycles and eventually got it clean, but not perfect, and opted to coat it with POR15. Results so far have been fine.

To the original poster I stand corrected on the front fender, it is actually an early Goldwing GL1000 chrome fender. It has the flare at the bottom of the fender that the early Wings used. The CB 900 fender does not have that bottom flared section.

Part of the agreement with my uncle was I would not sell it. All changes I’m making are cosmetic or ergonomic and completely reversible. Plus the joy of riding this family heirloom is exciting as well. I’m definitely keeping this and who knows, maybe I’ll pass it on to my nephew in 20 years. If theres still gasoline available.

No biggie. I got the cb900c front fender and I think it’ll be a great look. Still waiting on the cx500c rear fender. Should be here tomorrow.flyin900 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 28, 2021 3:50 am To the original poster I stand corrected on the front fender, it is actually an early Goldwing GL1000 chrome fender. Re: My 1st Goldwing. 82 GL1100...seat options, fender options and more!
Haven't posted for a while. Been busy doing all the work to the 82'.
Rebuilt the carbs using the randakk kit and manual. Bike starts instantly, idles beautifully, and revs up smoothly now. What a relief. Removed the engine guard bars with highway pegs. The 40" width was just a little too much for my taste. I got a buffing wheel from Harbor freight and polished the intake manifolds and carb caps. I am pleased with the outcome so far. Ran 5 syringes of new fuel thru the fuel pump to clear the varnished old fuel in it. New fuel filter of course. Last thing i want is anything other than clean gas going thru those carbs now.
Removed the old oversized fender and replaced with a CB900C chrome fender. Was plug n play, no mods needed. New Dunlop 404's are now on the rims, and the front end is now assembled with a new LED headlamp. Polished the fork tubes while on the bike to remove the corrosion. New EMGO Daytona bar. She's startin to look a lot more like a 70's custom than an 80's cruiser.
Got the Texavina seat from Vietnam. Well made and is the perfect look for what I'm going for. Next is de-rusting the tank, rebuilding the leaky shock, and installing the new shorter CX500C rear fender and Lucas light. Got LED turn signals for the rear as well. Only 10 days left to get it done. Back to the barn I go......

- Tanks cleared and back in, starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Putting the bits and bobs back on the front end, mirrors, carb chrome cover, faux tank, threw on the side panel to get an idea of how she'll be finished.
I am very pleased so far and am sure this'll be a stunner when I'm done. Engine starts INSTANTLY. less than 1 second after I push the starter she's purrin like a kitten. I've never owned a bike that started that fast, and ran soo smoothly. My GS750 took almost nothing to start, but this is incredible.
Here's the latest look...hopefully it'll be fully assembled by the weekend, and done before deadline.
